My apologies. I meant first-party html. The Help menu says it can be turned off, but Apple changed that.

I'm not entirely convinced that all first-party html is safe. Why would embedded code from a third party or in a downloaded pic or html document that's forwarded make any difference? If the code says phone home, it'll phone home, as long as the email program is online, couldn't it?

Even if it can't, I prefer having the choice of viewing one or a pile of pictures of little Johnny pulling the cat's tail, isn't that cute. Can't do it with Mail.

I don't even know what they mean by the various 'parties'! Perhaps if the url for the image is different from the "From:" address?

In any case, I would want the prefs to stop any "<img..." tag from operating, unless I give specific approval. I assume ( not again! ) that blocking that tag is all the program is doing to block those downloads. Any html capable email program has a built-in mini-browser ( actually more like an interpreter ) that scans the html to know what to do with it just like a 'real' browser. But that mini-browser can be set to disregard anything the developers want it to and that's what I thought Mail and other pref-enabled programs did. But I have no bit-level knowledge on exactly what they do.

It is depressing if Apple is so 'attached' to html that they can't allow the user to disable some of it.

Still, I don't hold out much hope for much in the way of improvement in Eudora. It will require more than a few programmers sent over from Qualcomm, IMHO. If the Mozilla group doesn't see a real benefit in the arrangement, I don't see why they would do much with it. I have yet to actually use Thunderbird, but I do get a little irritated at FFs inability to use Mac text input boxes ( the up/down arrow keys don't take one to either end of the text, just like Windows doesn't ). I assume that's the price we pay for 'cross-platform' compatibility?

I've sent myself test emails with pic attachments, and there is no way I can find to block the pix in Mail, so I stay with Thunderbird and the email apps in SeaMonkey and Mozilla 1.3.1 running on OS 9.

What problem has surfaced with Eudora? Even if it's orphaned, who cares? OS 9 is a zombie, but it still walks and talks.

I think you need to create an HTML message with the images being called with a standard 'img' tag from a source somewhere on the internet ( <img href="http://somedomain/MyImages/SomeOutstandingPicture.jpg" width="wide" height="short" alt=""> ). Attachments are not what I would call 'third/second-party' images, nor would images actually loaded in the body of a plain text message.

I'll try to create one of these html animals and send it to you if you'll send me a message with abdfromark at mac dot com ( it's a throw-away address, so don't bother putting it an address book ).

Don't bother. I get lots of html messages from a particular correspondent, along with blinking, animated ads at the bottom of each email as an attachment that flogs "free" smilies.
