Should you update to X10.4.8?
« on: October 19, 2006, 12:01:25 PM »
Have any of you experienced the problems with 10.4.8?

Based on problems I've seen on various forums, I've decided to stick with 10.4.7 for the time being.
Cheers, Tom

I've had no problems and don't know of any of my friends having problems with this update.  Do you have a specific reference?

I had a big problem with 10.4.7, which no one seemed to be able to pinpoint, and I wound up reinstalling all my system software, went back to 10.4.6.  This time I figured I would just take the plunge anyway, updated to 10.4.8, and no problems.  It's been about two weeks so far, with no down side.

FWIW - and this has probably been posted before - here's a good tip from a Tech friend of mine, that has never let me down.  When it comes to System Updates, I never use Software Update.  I go to the Apple downloads page and I always get the "Combined Updater" and download that.

Two reasons for this:  Combo Update reinstalls stuff in your System than may have been corrupted and it avoids installing over cable or DSL, which is not 100% reliable.

I don't think there's ever been an update that didn't cause problems for some one. Thinking.gif

I'm still at 10.3.4, so it's been a while since I've had any direct experience. blush-anim-cl.gif But, if it ain't broke...

Another very important action to take before updtaing is to make sure all Apple apps are where Apple expects them to be. For some reason, Apple seems to be the only develpoer that can't find their own apps ( or simply refuses to try ). wallbash.gif

I would also recomend quiting any and all apps. Maybe even unpluging your internet connection during the process, that should keep any 'hidden' app from accidentally 'phoning home' ( including Software Update! ).

The other pretty much accepted techniques include:
Before upgrading:
• Print out any reported fixes for reported problems caused by the upgrade
• Repair permissions
• Archive important files/apps
• Create as much free space on the drive as is convenient
• Have a relaxed lunch with your wife

After upgrading:
• Repair permissions
• Use third-party apps one at a time for a while ( making sure they still preform as expected )
• Slowly add third-party "Login Items" with a Log In/Restart after each addition

These instructions will self destruct within 60 seconds of beginning any OS upgrade. eek2.gif

Wiser words were never spoken! smile.gif

I personally have have zero troubles with 10.4.8 on two Macs: One PPC and one Intel. In fact, I think the general feeling from users has been that 10.4.8 is the most stable 10.4.x release to date. FWIW, I always use software update and rarely repair permissions, but still don't have problems biggrin.gif

Updated this machine (finally) from 10.4.5 to 10.4.8 two days ago. So far so good. Have had some ongoing issues with Safari quits that have been happening for quite some time, but they seem to be javascript-related and confined to a just a few sites (though the CBS site took down Firefox too). Tossed every preference I could find but haven't had time to figure out if the problem remains. Not a biggie in the grand scheme of things.

That's why Airbus drivers get the big bucks - to be overly paranoid.    thumbup.gif

Did you just change all your personal info, or am I going nuts?  Didn't it say that you were in MA and show a bus-load (snork, snork) of different Macs?

I'm just a lowly Cherokee driver, and plenty paranoid myself, but I still hope the FAA doesn't mess with the Hudson and East River VFR Corridors - man, what a ride that is, especially at night!

I haven't changed any personal info, I'm still "Grumpy"! Sounds like you got me and Paddy mixed up. I'm the ugly one! harhar.gif She's the one with the Mac collection ( that always makes one look great! ).

I think the Feds have already started requiring all fixed wings to fly high enough to maintain radar contact. That will make VFR a little less common with lowered ceilings, but also keep more separation between the 'birds' and the 'rocks'! smile.gif

Cherokee's are not that much different than Airbuses; push the stick/yoke forward and the buildings get bigger, pull the stick/yoke back and the buildings get smaller. What else do you need to know?! eek2.gif Only real difference is how high you are from the ground even after the landing in the 'Bus'! ( except for the 320/319 'miniBus' )

Speaking of size differences, did you hear about the Avenger and the Cirrus accident at Oshkosh? Very sad. PM me for details.

I was finally forced into updating to 10.4.8, because all of a sudden, Safari started getting very slow, and taking up all the cpu. . . like up to 85%, and holding there, so, after backing things up, doing a repair permissions, and running DW, I went ahead and downloaded the combo updater, and went for it.  2nd day, Safari is working fine, and no problems so far.  I did take the precaution of unhooking everything except the keyboard.  Was surprised (pleasantly), that it didn't bother to update iTunes, as it seems that each time you update it, there's more restrictions on it, so I have gotten in the habit of saving my old iTunes.
