"The Adventures of MrsLop in Mac G3 land"
« on: October 19, 2006, 01:16:58 PM »
Good Day to you Kris, Chris and all of my global family at TS,
 yahoo.gif  clap.gif  cheer.gif
The newer Mac is a G3 450MHz 384MB RAM 100MHz Bus.

I can't believe it just yet, I just keep looking at it and rubbing my eyes. I am so overwhelmed.

Thank you so much kris: cheer.gif  cheer.gif  cheer.gif  cheer.gif  cheer.gif
I have known some very fine human beings on this Earth and especially on TS. I have to say that, Kris, you went to extraordinary lengths to make my dreams come true. If you could just see my expression you would know that I am just bursting with joy.

chriskleeman, DaveF and RobW all contributed to making sure that I stay online with software, hardware, connections and to restoring my files -including zip100, disks and a hub.  WOW.gif

I received it about an hour and a half ago. I couldn't get online immediately because I forgot to plug in the modem. oops.gif

Since I know nothing at all about this machine and especially OS 10.3.9, I am going to have a lot of catching up to do with most of this community.

I followed your instructions, Kris, and I didn't hook up the hub yet...I need to do this. I also need to set up my mail accounts but I can still get to my mail from Cox regardless of whether I set up an automatic to the desktop thing.

I have several questions about upgrades to the machine already. I probably won't do this today, but I need the information, as I probably will do the upgrade in November.

1- Who do you trust to buy memory from?
I need PC100 256MB SDRAM DIMMS 168pin. I did a search to find out what Apple specs are. I haven't gotten brave enough to open the case yet and haven't even looked inside. According to kris, there are already a 256MB and a 128MB running on this machine.

2- What kind of speakers could I hook up to this system? My husband does a lot of listening to music online as he publishes an online Christian music newsletter. I would like to surprise him with this. eBay has some Harmon Kardon speakers which seem to be very inexpensive according to my son. I can do this right away. I just don't know what works with this particular system.

Kris I still can't believe it. Please extend my Thanks to your Dad as well. My God shower you with an abundance of His choicest blessings.

Love, Blessings and Prayers,
Myrna

Enjoy your new Mac!! I do want to mention that you gave credit to me in error. I hope that whomever you meant to give the credit to, accepts a well deserved pat on the back via me. smile.gif There was recently a thread about speaker recommendations. You can find it here. If I recall correctly, there were several good recommendations made in that thread.

I've always been happy with "OWC" when it comes to buying RAM. Others here have been happy with other vendors, and I know there's been threads from time to time on this topic.

Again, enjoy the Mac, and I hope the person you meant to thank gets the credit they deserve. smile.gif (Might it have been "BobW"?? He's also a Philly guy.)

EDIT:  By the way, you might want to pick up the "Missing Manual" book by David Pogue about OS 10.3. His books are easy (and often fun) to read--and VERY helpful. You can find the Panther edition for that OS here. I believe it's half-price at that site.

RobW,

doh.gif Thank you, I stand corrected, I am so overwhelmed with so many thoughts. Thank you for the tip on the book, I'll need all the refernce material that I can find right now.

I love golden retrievers. My daughter has had two of them but both passed away. I trusted them around my grandchildren, they are wonderful, loving and very forgiving of little children and their antics. The males are expecially gentle with children.

Blessings and Prayers,
Myrna

I have an emergency! sos.gif
My mail account is set up for exactly one. How do I set up more identities on this machine? My husband will probably be amused. I need to set up my Intercessory Prayer line account post haste, as many requests come through this that we need to pray for.

Thanks for any advice you can give on this matter.

Blessings and Prayers,
MrsLop

I'm so glad you like the new Mac! As I mentioned to you I was impressed with how quick it ran. Looks like you didn't have much trouble getting it set up and online. smile.gif

If you want to create another mail account you will need to follow the instructions I gave you in the last email for setting up accounts Mail, Prefs, Accounts, use the + at the bottom of the pane to start the new account, then fill in the info for him.

If you mean a new "user" on the Mac then you need to go into System Prefs (grey Apple with light switch) and click on "Accounts". There you will see the same type of window and pane as in Mail with the + at the bottom. Click the + and you will get a new box where you can put in "Name", "Short name", "Password", "Hint" , etc. for Tom. Then you can go to the "Limitations" and either give him full authority as an admin or make him a regular user. I would not suggest creating a master password or using File Vault. You really don't need it and it could be disastrous if you forget the password.

Creating a new user for Tom will allow him to have his own environment and preferences while using the Mac. But you will have to log in and out as you switch users. You can enable fast user switching by clicking on the "Login Options" at the bottom of the pane in "Accounts" and checking the appropriate box.

Hope this answers your question. Don't know anything about external speakers to purchase. I hooked up some old stereo ones I had via an ancient amplifier that was gathering dust. Just fortunate all the pieces fit and worked. smile.gif

So happy you are now running a reliable machine. It was bobw that sent the hub and cables. And my thanks as well to DaveF, bobw and of course ChrisK (who BTW is quite a talented musician!) for helping out in this endeavour. Took a little longer than expected but it all worked out just right.

thanx.gif all!  notworthy.gif

Good Evening Dick,

clap.gif I still can't believe it. I have been very busy doing mail accounts on the new(er) Mac. Kris helped to walk me through it.

OS X is so responsive and this machine is quite fast albeit it only has 384MB of RAM.

Sometimes Tom does go to some artists websites which have a lot of graphics and  music, so I am thinking of installing more RAM if he has a problem with it. Anew mouse and some speakers for Tom are probably all I need for the machine. My son wants to know if we can get his PC on the same cable line as the Mac, so maybe I will need a router. Otherwise, it should be fine for my day to day needs.

Again, it was TSers to the rescue of MrsLop.

I am having so much fun and I can't wait to learn more about all the things it can do.

Blessings and Prayers,
Myrna

Hi Myrna,

Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is way cool! Way to go Krissel! And DaveF and bobw, but I gotta tell ya' Kris, you need a Santa suit! santagrin.gif

Now, can anyone use a Powerbase 200 with a Powerlogix G3 300 card upgrade? While I was futzing around trying to get it working for Myrna, Kris decided to rock the house!

C'mon, it  has a massive 2 GB drive, a 40XCDR, 144 MB RAM, VGA and Mac monitor outputs, + an ethernet card... seriously, if anyone needs it, take it for free!

I'm so happy for you Myrna!

Seriously, Kris deserves a huge pat on the back. We had a lot of e-mails back and forth through this process, and she has put in a lot of time and effort. Of course, the tutorials she had to take on older Mac hardware and ethernet didn't hurt a bit Devilish2.gif

Again, through the process of this effort, I am reminded of the remarkable community that TS is. Just fantastic!

Myrna, you won't believe how fast that machine will guide you through your internet browsing. Enjoy!

Thanks Chris. But you put in as much with that Powerbase... and now it needs a good home. yes.gif

I think Chris and I now know more about the older hardware than we ever thought we would. Kind of like taking a history class. smile.gif

No sooner did I post the reply in the thread earlier than the phone rang and I was delighted to hear Myrna on the other end. Much easier to explain things when both people are looking at the screen and working together.

Next we have to get the Mac to see the Laserwriter for printing. It may just be a case of being sure AppleTalk is on and things are hooked up in the right order.

I am more than thrilled that things are going well so far and I could help out. That  is what being a TSer is all about.

I need PC100 256MB SDRAM DIMMS 168pin. I did a search to find out what Apple specs are. I haven't gotten brave enough to open the case yet and haven't even looked inside. According to kris, there are already a 256MB and a 128MB running on this machine.

The Grackle memory controller on the B&Ws is very, very picky - particularly when running MacOS 10.x.  It is probably best to run identical RAM chips from the same manufacturer.

. . . you need to look for SDRAM modules capable of running safely at 100MHz (PC100 - even if backward compatible from a PC133 standard), with a Latency value of 2-2-2 at 100MHz and capable of handling refresh sequences with 8ns. intervals.

The B&Ws originally shipped with 10ns RAM from the factory, even though the official Apple spec was 8ns at the time - there was not sufficient 8ns RAM available at the time of shipping.  10ns RAM worked fine with MacOSs prior to MacOSX, but there can be real problems with 10ns RAM and MacOSX.  If you still have any 10ns RAM in that machine and you plan on running MacOSX, you may want to pull the 10ns RAM first.

There have been problems reported with OWC RAM in the B&Ws.  I believe that MacGurus RAM is probably your best choice for additional RAM in the B&W:
256 MB PC100/PC133 DIMMS 32x4 build, 8 NS, CL2

Sweet spot for RAM in the B&Ws running MacOSX has most often reported to be 768MB.  Anything over that is gravy - or specific to your needs.

Epaminondas, Chris and Kris,

Thank you Epam, for the links. I just downloaded the pdf on G3's from the MacGurus site. I'm so glad that you stopped by with that information. I was very concerned about installations and types to buy. There are lots of RAM that don't work - if the complaints on the internet forums are any indication. People who just want to sell stuff will sometimes state things which are erroneous. I am glad that I have TS to come to for honest experiences with these things.

kris, you are so right about Chris. He is surely a very versatile and very talented musician. I listened to his Blues CD.
Chris, you were a real TS angel with all you did to try to get that machine working for me. You spent so much time on the project. Thanks again for the Panther CD's. kudos to you and I am blessed to have you as a friend.

OK, kris,
I looked at the back of my B&W and there is no (phone) modem connection, as Apple made that an option. Theoretically, the Ethernet jack was all that I needed to plug into the B&W. The connections to the Serial Port, as I said last night in our phone conversation, had to be removed in favor of the Farallon which was supplied by bobw. The question then becomes, where does all the other stuff get connected, using what adapters and what cables? I looked in vain all morning for the instructions from bobw, but I can't locate them. (Bad Myrna- go and sit in your box, in the corner and don't come out until you remember where you put those instructions!)

What I have on hand:
Farallon EtherMac iPrint Adapter LT with TECHWORKS Serial port Adapter connecting both. TECHWORKS has two opennings for connectors to the Farallon EtherMac. EtherMac,( is connected already also has a serial plug in openning. At the other end, it is connected with still another)
CSA Type PCC cable which is connected to the hub already.
One Plug-in Class 2 Transformer (with Serial receptor type end.)
Farallon Fast Starlet Dual Speed Hub/5
Additional (Blue) Cable (labeled by bobw, plug this end into back of computer and connected to the hub already).

I was assured that this was a plug and play with no drivers needed.

Don't know what went wrong. I did exactly what the instructions directed me to do, at the time. I had to disconnect everything and disconnect the printer again so that I could get the Mac back up and online. No one told me that I would have to be a contortionist to get the things into such small spaces.LOL

That's all for now.
Blessings and Prayers to you all,
Myrna

Thanks for adding to the discussion E.  smile.gif
A 256 chip added to the 384 would probably be plenty for her needs.

FWIW, the B/W in question is a Rev. 2 and is already running 10.3.9 with 9.2.2 as Classic and also on a separate partition.
(10.3.9 on 20G partition, 9.2.2 on 10G---of course a bit less for each due to formatting oddities)

Myrna, I didn't see your post til now as I was posting at the same time.

I put out an email to bobw to see if he can stop by this thread when he gets a chance to help sort out this mess.

Have to admit I really am not sure what is connected to what since I don't know all the parts involved.

Back later, need to take a nap.   sleep1.gif

Hi Myrna

For the printer.

The Farallon iPrint, hub and Phonenet adapter I sent should have all been connected properly.

The Blue Ethernet cable from the Hub plugs into the Ethernet port on the back of the machine.

The Phonenet adapter was plugged into the Farallon iPrint, the other cable coming out of it plugs into the printer's serial (round) port.

Then go to the Print Center and see if the printer shows up, check IP printing while in there.

I never used the iPrint in an OS X system, but I think it will need to be setup using an IP.

Another way would be to install on the OS 9 system and share the printer with OS X.

Good Afternoon bobw from Rainy RI,
I know that I followed your instructions yesterday. Nothing came on -at all. I don't know what happened or why. I know that I checked to see if the lamp would light up if I plugged it into the same strip, so it wasn't the electricity. Believe me, I tried everything. I emailed kris this PM and told her that the there was no sign of life and everything else went down with it. So, I couldn't make the choices from anything on the Mac. I had to disconnect all the cables and plugs from the Farralon setup and reconnect the regular setup for the system to get back online.
I only have the modem, monitor, printer, ADB mouse w/keyboard and Ethernet plugged in right now and all I changed was to add the Farallon w/ everything that you sent. You may be right about trying to set this up on OS 9 instead.

I really need to get this printer up and running. My husband uses it for worksheets etc for the students at his school. They have one printer at school, the rest of the faculty and staff and anyone attached to ministries at the church also use it, so it's very hard on him to get time on that printer. Now that he doesn't have a free period, it's even harder as he has to go in much earlier and/or stay later, if he has any printing to do. The poor guy never complains either. I just want to do this for his sake.

I hope that I can find a way to do this before he has to go back to school again on Monday morning.

Thank you so much for sending me the Farallon and for the instructions and for your help here on the board. I am so sorry that I mistakenly gave a Thank You to RobW and he brought my attention to the person who deserved the credit, which was of course, you.

Blessings and Prayers,
Myrna
