Myrna,
The AppleWorks CD I sent you can also be installed in OS X as version 6.2.9.  I forgot to mention that because, at the time, you were in OS 8.

TS is a special place with special people, and I have been following this wonderful thread every day.  With talent like Kris, E, Paddy and Chris now helping you, everything can't help but turn out right.   thumbup.gif

Good Day to you, DaveF, cheer.gif

Isn't it wonderful. I'm so happy that you decided to post today. You are another saving Angel who rescued me from having no way to backup my files and a way to restore our heavily used AppleWorks program. Yes, I can use the CD that you provided me. BTW, the iomega Zip100 plus worked like a charm. I was able to backup all our documents and download the files from the disks to the OS 9.2.2 side. They opened up no problem, as did AppleWorks. Kris had already installed AppleWorks on the OS's , so I didn't need to do the install on OSX or Classic, I used the CD to install on the separate OS9 partition. I am so happy just knowing that I have the CD, it gives me so much peace of mind. clap.gif

Tom hasn't gone online since I connected the B&W. Right now, he just waiting for the printer to get connected before doing anything on this system.

Love wub.gif , Blessings and Prayers,
Myrna

Hi Myrna!

I've been following this thread... not much to add technically but wanted to say I'm glad to see things are working out for you! clap.gif

As usual I'm behind in my email... please don't take it as an insult, it's just me. If I had to make a living writing I'd be in big trouble...  dntknw.gif  oops.gif I do think of you and your family often.

welcome.gif back to my Advenures Di,

When I received the B&W, I immediately set it up and forgot to do a backup of my Outlook mail. Your email and picture is still stranded back on the good old 4400.

thanx.gif For the kind thoughts of my family, they just left after a nice visit. Bob moved more stuff in with my grandson, Corey. Dawn was here with Jessica. They just returned from a photo shoot. Jessica is now interested in becoming a model so they went to get the pictures developed and stopped by to see which ones I liked. They're doing a concensus to see which should be chosen for her portfolio.

I have email on the B&W, so if you would email, I can learn something new like how to add to my address book. It seems a bit more complicated than my Outlook mail.

Love, Blessings and Prayers to you and Fidget,
Myrna

Hi Myrna,

Idea: eek2.gif

You have Zip drives for both machines up and running, I believe... for now, if you want to leave everything set up, so you don't have to keep disconnecting and re-connecting cables, the easiest thing to do is to make a copy of the file you want to print on the Zip drive on the B/W G3, and take that Zip disc out and put it in the Zip drive on your 4400, open the file on the Zip disc in Appleworks and print away!

That should work until we can figure something else out, or until the 4400 dies and is much easier than what  you have to do now. And, your original data is still on the G3 B/W.

If we can't get the Farallon adapter up and running, I'll get you the Powerbase, install the necessary print drivers, etc, and make it a print server in the worst case scenario. It may be that Paddy's router will solve the problem, because once the router is in place, all the Cox internet connection will see is the router, and the hub may be able to be connected sucessfully that way... a little help from bobw on that, perhaps??? You shouldn't have a problem with the HP Printer, it will be recognized by OSX immediately... it works a little differently from Chooser, but it's actually easier to choose a printer in Panther. So,  you'll at least have a back-up printer! Wow,  you're getting Christmas in October!!!

We're working on it! wacko.gif

Best,

Good Day to you Chris,

The Farallon Adapter, the little one that connects directly to the electricity and not the much larger one that also connects to the electricity is actually burning up. When I tried to reconnect everything last night I burned my hand trying to pull it out of the strip. I could replace the adapter, if that is what is causing the problem; but I don't think that it is just one thing that is wrong here. Kris and I were on the phone last night discussing the procedure and order of connecting the setup.I wrote down the instructions and followed them and it still didn't work. Specifically, I have 5 lights on the modem:Test,Data,PC,Cable and Power. The Power and Cable lights come on when I plug in the Farallon, but nothing else. when I didn't have the Farallon plugged in and just the modem, all of the lights come on. when I  plug in the ethernet to the B&W all the lights come on. So, without the printer in the equation, it (internet)  works just fine. dntknw.gif

It all started when my Grandson Corey, who just graduated from a Tech High School where they used Macs all the time in their labs, took a good look at the Farallon and connections for it and announced that it should work. He plugged in each to see if the juice was going through and it was. I had my children and grandchildren here so I waited until after they left to try to reconnect. I was successful in getting the OS X to bring up the printer, however, I had to disconnect from the modem in order to print. I was able to print one of Tom's documents that I had put into OSX. So, at least the old Personal LaserWriter 320 can do a print from whatever is already on the drive. The real tricky part here is having internet access to print.

Is it the settings? I don't know what settings to use. I just went with whatever Kris had already entered.

As for the zips, I have info on the 4400 which I have to copy to the external zip and then copy to the B&W. So, I have to disconnect and then reconnect everything again.  whew.gif

I just installed iCab, as Tom's favorites (all his artists and venues are on the hotlist) and now I need to get them from the 4400 onto a zip and put his favorites back into the hotlist on the new iCab  in OSX.

So, I'm off to crawl around on the floor again. I'll check back when my mission is completed.

Love, Blessings and Prayers,
Myrna

Myrna, Paddy has the USB printer and router in the mail (USPS) and it should be there in a couple days. Once it gets there you will have immediate printing capabilities and you can direct connect the ethernet to the cable modem. Printing of web info will be possible.

After the dust settles we will give the router setup a go. It is entirely feasible that there is something wrong with the hub if it gets as hot as you said. That is not supposed to happen. A router is a lot 'smarter' than a hub as it negotiates the transmission of data that is being sent whereas a hub just allows data to flow and conflicts can arise in particular if you try to connect two computers to a modem. Having the router will allow your son to connect his PC if he wishes.

By the time this is all done you will be an expert in networking .
In the meantime you will get your gold medal for gymnastics by plugging and unplugging the cables.  smile.gif

This is not good news! And it could actually be dangerous. I suggest unplugging that 'power brick' immediately. It could, in fact, actually ignite.

Now, do you have more than one 'power brick' in use?
If you do, it is possible that you have plugged it into the wrong 'appliance' which may be asking for more power than the brick can supply. The brick is trying to provide the power but is over heating in the effort. Make sure the correct brick is connected to the correct 'appliance'.

If this is the only brick in use, it is either not the correct one or it is electrically broken or the 'appliance' is asking, incorrectly ( possibly due to a short ), for too much power.

In either case, do not continue to use the brick until the solution is found. Scorthed fingers are the least of your worries. eek2.gif

Good Morning to you ABD,

What I did just before coming to the TS board and viewing your post was to disconnect the Techworks TechNet ST that connected to the serial port and installed my  Apple serial port cable to the Farallon, then to the Hub and the little adapter stayed nice and cool to the touch. All the lights came on on the EtherMac iPrint Adapter and the Hub but not on my Cable/Ethernet Modem. So, it looks like the culprit was the TechWorks rather than the adapter. I was able to print using my setup, but not using the Internet, only what was already on the OS 9 Drive.

I have been trying to get more information about how to print with Apple LaserWriter Personal 320 by googling this. I have found some information, but not with the same exact setup and OS.

Thanks for your concern, an electrical fire is definately not a good thing to have happen.

Blessings and Prayers,
Myrna
