Internet connection speed Olympics
« on: October 25, 2006, 09:16:45 AM »
I've had my new iMac for two weeks now. It is SILENT and beautiful and fast. It replaces my G4 Quicksilver, (AKA Mr. Vaccuum Cleaner and/or Mr. Wind Tunnel). My G4's fifth birthday will be tomorrow.

I set the new iMac up in virtually no time at all, just as slick as could be. It found our Linksys wireless router right away (Cable), it's nice to have one less cord dangling off the back of my desk.

Would it be faster to connect via an ethernet cable, or is this wireless connection about the same? Is there a test? Also, I'm worried about connecting the ethernet cable--what if I couldn't get back on the wireless connection again?

Theoretically, your connection speed would be faster using a wire than wireless.

Wireless is possibly subject to interference from other wireless devices and is inherently less secure from hacking or other malicious intent [which also is potential, and not necessarily actual].

There are websites that will measure your actual speed.  Google for speed tests.

Your mileage may vary.

But not that much faster - and I like the convenience of a wireless connection.  Be sure you have a name for your network and password access, to prevent potential wrongdoers from using your wireless network and ISP for their own nefarious purposes.

I like the speakeasy one because i gives you several mirror sites to choose from.

Congratulations on the new machine. smile.gif

Wired is always faster.

You can switch back and forth no problem.

Is there a reason to go wireless with that Desktop?  Thinking.gif

The only reason: one less cable snaking under the desk.

cCongrats, jjoan!

I wouldn't think you'd mind an xXtra cable.

Thank you for the Speakeasy link!  Its fun to see how fast we are around here.

About the wireless, we haven't used it, as the cables do fine for us, having a smaller house.
But I know that the wireless that friends have is very very nice and easy to set up.
So I would go ahead and use both, especially if you intend to move your computers about your house or property.  Have the desktop wired, and perhaps the laptop wireless, it is so nice to have both, my neighbours say(one sits in her flower-garden with her powerbook in nice weather).

And your new 24" iMac is silent!  I surely am looking forward to when I get mine.
My two 20" iMacs are very quiet, but my old G4 tower was rather noisy, but it is now residing at our daughter's house, and they are near the city.  Its very quiet here in the country, so I had found the sound rather annoying.

Thanks,
Jane
