Stuffit Expander won't quit, so.......
« on: October 28, 2006, 09:54:36 AM »
A few days ago I started to download the latest version of Stuffit, but halfway thru the download realised I already had the version being downloaded, so cancelled the download.  Immediately a window opened entitled 'Progress' with the usual long bar with moving white & yellow stripes.

The 'progress' went on for ages with nothing happening, so I hit the 'Stop' button, which effectively stopped it.  I then went to close the progress window but found the red close button was greyed out, as was the green button.  The only 'live' button was the yellow one and of course that just sent the window to the dock.  Clicking on it in the dock in the hope that I could trash it from there just produced a wee window with the only possibility being 'Open'.

Problem is that Expander just won't quit.  The 'Quit Expander' on the drop-down menu is greyed out.  I've tried to put the window in the Trash, but of course that won't work.   I've tried a restart, but just get a message to remind me that Expander hasn't quit so the computer won't restart. wallbash.gif

Just how to I get rid of the darned thing???????

You can try doing a "force quit." There a couple of ways to do this. Either click and hold the program's icon on the dock until you see the option to force quit, or go under the Apple Menu->force quit. From the window select what you want to force quit (StuffitExpander, I assume.) This should do the trick. If not, I'm sure others here will know how to do it for you. smile.gif

EDIT:  Of course, just having reread your post, you may have already tried the "dock option"--sorry. oops.gif

Sometimes simply Re-Launching Finder will clear up its 'confusion' ( that's where the warning about what is running comes from, IMHO ). And it's a lot faster than a Restart.

Second, you can also try a Log OUT/IN.

I noticed another post/thread where you say you "switched off" the computer. If that means what I think, I'd suggest trying all the other 'soft' quitting options before turning the power switch off/on. There can also be disk writes going on in the background that you don't see, turning the power off at that instance can be very dangerous. eek2.gif

And sometimes, even a Log Out can take quite some time. Try to be patient as the OS/Finder tries to shutdown in an orderly ( if slow ) way.

Two other ways to force quit things: press Apple+option+escape keys - which will bring up the Force Quit Application window. Select the item you want to be done with and force quit.

Or, bring up the Activity Monitor (from your Applications->Utilities folder) and select the offending process and then hit "Quit Process" (the stop sign). That usually takes care of it. Don't think I've ever had anything that refused to submit to one of those measures!

Thanks all.   Have taken note of the dangers of switching off and should a like circumstance happen again, will try all your various suggestions.    I won't actually remember them of course, but I keep a folder with all TS answers to my problems.

That works well — as long as I remember where I put the folder  biggrin.gif
