Blog Software for our site
« on: October 29, 2006, 11:16:50 AM »
Our host allows for a blog, and they have "get by" blogging software available; but I'd like something a bit fancier, that is either free or not expensive, and I'd like to be able to make adjustments and posts offline and then upload easily.

Any and all suggestions cheerfully welcome.

kimmer,

Not sure about what you're looking for and what your host will support on the package you're running, but if you've got PHP/mysql support, you could install Serendipity.

I had it installed in < 5 mins.

Works pretty well as far as I can tell, but again, I don't know what you're looking for exactly and don't know what your host package is like.

Take care,

Chris

Thanks, Chris. I'll check into it. I'm waiting to hear from our hosting company on exactly what they will let us run.

I've also been looking at bBlog and WordPress.

All your host has to provide is the correct version of MySQL and PHP for a specific bloging programme.

I installed WordPress because of the ease of installation, the features and the cost...free.

Another popular bloging programme is MovableType. A little more involved to install, but similar to WordPress.

I think Kimmer is looking for a solution that is hosted on HER domain - not someone else's as blogger is. WordPress etc. can be installed on your own web site. smile.gif

One thing you might want to consider is the potential security issues you take on by installing software on your Web server.

When you install software such as forum or blogging software on your Web server, you are taking on the responsibility of checking for security updates to that software and applying them as needed. For some reason, Weblog and forum software seem especially vulnerable to such security issues. For example, an older version of WordPress allowed an attacker to take total control over a site that had it installed, uploading and downloading and modifying files at will. I have seen eBay and PayPal "phish" sites set up on servers with the vulnerable version of WordPress installed. The hole has been fixed, but some WordPress users have not installed it--and hackers have automatic tools that scan the entire Internet, looking at tens of thousands of servers an hour searching for that vulnerable version of WordPress.

I'm not saying you should not do this, of course; I am saying that any time you install software on a Web server, you should be aware of the potential security issues, and you should always keep on top of that software, and be aware of any security patches which are released.

Another route which you may want to explore is using an existing blogging site like LiveJournal or MySpace. With LiveJournal, you can "embed" the journal in your site--it is still hosted on the LiveJournal servers, but it looks like it is contained within your site. Whether or not this will meet your needs is a question only you can answer.

Paddy is correct, I am considering installing the software on our domain.

Thanks for the heads-up, Tacit.
