MacDraw replacement....???
« on: December 03, 2006, 10:09:43 AM »
A friend of mine just moved (jumped - leaped) from an OLD mac SE30 running 6.5 to a new 17" itelMac w/ 10.4.8... eek2.gif

But he HAD MacDraw on the old one and used it for diagramming dog pedigrees.
He is looking for a replacement... main requirements--- EASY, CHEAP, compatible w/10.4.8...

doh.gif Oh, and also available in some form other than download....  He doesn't have internet connections of anykind dntknw.gif  "Don't need it, don't want it"...

Any assistance would be very much appreciated...

Omnigraffle used to come bundled with OS X, don't know if it still does. Have him check his Applications folder. Otherwise he can probably order by phone.

Bob:

I think that the "Draw" application in "Appleworks 6" is compatable with Macdraw.  As I recall I had fax cover sheets etc ginned up in Macdraw. After upgrading the machines and SW to OSX, those old files opened up in Appleworks.

New iMacs come with OmniOutliner, but not OmniGraffle.

OmniGraffle looks ideal, though at $79, it's not cheap if all you want it for is to diagram dog pedigrees! I'm not sure how you would go about installing it without an internet connection; generally the license validation part requires an interenet connection. There are no doubt ways to solve this problem (external drive on your Mac, Bob?) but without trying it, I'm not sure exactly what would work. Bringing the iMac over to your house might be easiest of all, if you have a router and adding another machine to the network is simple.

Not sure if this app would work and I know nothing at all about it:

Or there is some software specifically for pedigrees (which work on Macs):

thanx.gif for your suggestions and assistance.

I've passed the information on to my friend and he is 'evaluating' it..

Still not sure how he got his Mac registered or plans to update any system software he has?!?!?!

Thanks again,

MacDraw on Steroids

Not only is EazyDraw designed in the spirit of the Classic Mac drawing applications; it can fully import your classic mac drawing files to OS X.  Import and edit Claris Draw, Mac Draw II and Mac Draw Pro drawing files.  The example to the right shows an illustration that EazyDraw imported directly from the MacDrawPro original.

thanx.gif SB....

I'll pass that on also... good to see that he can get it on CD....
Not sure if he'll go for the price... he uses a vice-grip for a wallet, but at the price he sells his dogs eek2.gif  he'd have it covered...

Thanks,

I downloaded Design Workshop Lite a few years back, but never really played with it much. I've no idea if it is compatible with OSX.

Hey Bob, If the MacDraw import option is not important then I would likely look at a few other less costly programs.

You may be able to download these programs for him and make a disc image.
He may be able to call on-them and pay by phone. They in turn will give him a pass key, he in turn can request any updates be snailed mailed.  doh.gif

I used M$ Excel to make a Family Tree diagram. It was quite complex going back to the 1700s. Used the Borders function to draw the lines & the Text function for the names/dates. Adjusting the Column widths accomodates long/short names. It was quite easy to make after I made a pencil diagram as a draft.
Cheers, Tom

If it's Pedgree's he wants why not use a Genealogical program, most don't care what kind of 'animal' they track! My rather computer-illiterate wife has been using Reunion for about 10 years. If she can use it, any one can! It can be bought on disk easily and I think you can even buy a hardcopy manual. But if this guys doesn't want to pay even $10 a month for landline-based internet, I'm not sure he'd want to pay the $79 for Reunion. And, no matter what app he uses, there is simply no substitute for online access to upgrades/info/tips/help. Is he aware that most companies don't provide free phone support anymore, at least in English?! Is there some reason he wants to limit his market to local free ads? Thinking.gif

xABD... I'm sure we all have friends or know of some one that has the same mind set as my friend.... "Don't need it, don't want it, don't want to know about it... I'm happy the way things are"... doh.gif

I've dis-cussed this with him MANY times.....  wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif

We'll make progress small steps at a time.....

Again  thanx.gif  for the information, tips, and suggestions from all.
