I am looking to purchase an external DVD burner for our emac.  My son needs to be able to burn DVD's for school projects.  What do you recommend?

I've got a nice external Sony drive that's both USB2 & Firewire.  Unfortunately it's a work right now so I can't tell you the model #; but I mentioned it in a similar topic here sometime in the last six months.  It didn't come with MAC drivers but Toast picked it right up!

Not much. Only thing I can see is the second one is a newer version and offers one additional format... DVD-R DL: 8X, 6X, 4X, 2.4X

If dual layer recording is important to you, well... Thinking.gif

Well... they both support dual layer albeit the other model only in one format:
DVD+R DL: 6X, 4X, 2.4X

The draw back to using DL more than absolutely necessary for me would the cost of the media but ??? technology changes so fast who only knows what I'll want in a year or two... huh.gif

When I got this AlBook with the Combo Drive I never thought I'd want a Super Drive so given the choice I opted for the extra 1GB of RAM which I don't regret either... go figure!

Maybe it's a question of "want" versus "need"...  doh.gif  dntknw.gif  sos.gif

I just bought the Pioneer DVR-111 from OWC.  Eric, ext 110, explained the difference as "a bit faster, and two year newer technology.  Good enough for me, I'm now to the stage of little words, big pictures.

Haven't used it yet, as it came in last night, and I'm out of town for a couple of days, so no review until next week.

Yes, I know there are cheaper solutions out there, buy your own case, put in your own burner, but once in a whiile convenience is worth $10-$30 dollars.

The one I have is a Sony PRX-810UL and it works fine with Toast but isn't directly supported by OS 10.4!  It will burn both dual layer & double layer DVD's upto 8.5Gig capacity!

Thanks for the info Jen... smile.gif  About $25 extra for 2 yrs. newer technology is worth thinking about.

I like OWC, the company and their stuff. Good people and the 2 external HD's I've got just got plugged in and worked... no muss, no fuss, no noise... nada. I haven't had any problems with the LaCie either on OS X but you can't beat OWC the company IMO... got a question? Call and ask... simple.

The only thing I get dinged for is a bit of extra shipping, no duty on computer parts and the GST is unavoidable. Unfortunately the CDN $ is slipping again a bit...  tears.gif  It's been so good for awhile now...

Amazon.com! Arrrgghhh!!!! You know I often see stuff on there and it would be so easy to get through them... shipping is reasonable, they're dependable etc. etc. etc. however they will not ship anything but CD's , DVD's , VHS's or Books to Canada.

Kris... laugh.gif I love those studies where they compare a currency and "purchasing power"... I checked by Apple's store and a 2GB Nano is still $149 US and $169 CDN no matter how you cut it... but I did notice that since the new iPods came out Apple at least finally caught up with the "real" exchange rate... a 60GB video iPod used to be $499 CDN and now the 80GB video iPod is $399 CDN putting it about $50 more than the US price.

I have the PLEXTOR DVD+-RW (PX-716UF) model.  It connects through firewire, ilink, and USB 2.0. clap.gif

I've had it for almost 2 years now and it works great, fast and proven to be very, very reliable. cheer.gif

I use it with both iTunes, and Roxio Toast, not too crazy about iDVD (go figure) but it works with it also.
