Username and/or Password Dilemma
« on: January 23, 2007, 12:09:50 PM »
Hi, I have a new ISP. I contacted them after being unsuccessfully at opening my email account (not .mac email). I had been getting in without any problems. The tech suggested clearing caches and to contact Apple for assistance in doing that as he isn't trained in that area on Macs. doh.gif

The tech said he was able to access the account easily using my info. He even reset it using slightly different info. What do you suggest I do?

Can you be more specific? Who is your new ISP, and what problems are you having? Do you see any error messages, and if so, what do they say?

The new ISP is Charter Cable. Specifically, I can't get into my Charter email with one or the other of my username or password. It is undetermined which one was not being accepted. You probably are familiar with the practice of being assigned a user name and password when you open a new account on line, which you change almost immediately. I haven't used that account enough to change anything.  huh.gif

The error message was that either the username or password are not correct. The tech at Charter changed the username slightly and was able to access the account. When I tried I was refused access on the above mentioned error.  sad.gif

One thing you might check is whether you are using the exact numbers/letters and their capitaliztion is correct. Many years ago I had a problem getting access with ATT and it turned out the guy I spoke with on the phone had such and accent that I misunderstood one digit. Finally I talked to another tech who pronounced things properly and I got on.

Also those things are usually case sensitive so one letter capitalized or not will make a difference.

BTW, did you ever get my PM or email about using your old identity on TS. I changed the password as I mentioned in the PM; are you able to log in with your old ID?

Since you must not have recorded your assigned password and username, I’d suggest you call them back and somehow convince them you are who you say you are ( do you have a recent bill or the paper work they left when they set you up? ). Then, kindly ask them to give you another set of words over the phone or by mail, if they insist. Write them down and hide them where you can find them. Reset them, if you want, but make sure you note exactly what you change them to. Be especially careful of having the Caps Lock enabled or hitting the Shift key accidentally. Don’t confuse the number one (1) with a lower-case “L” (l) and the same goes for a zero (0) and the letter “O”.
