Print Sharing Weirdness
« on: January 24, 2007, 04:48:46 PM »
On my two computers, a PPC and an Intel iMac (both 10.4.8), Print Sharing and Apple talk are enabled. The machines are connected via a D-Link 604 router.

My printer (Epson R340) had been connected directly to the Intel machine with printing from the PPC working as expected.

But a few days ago, when trying to print a Word document from the PPC, Word would just quit. No alert, no dialog, nada.

So I did the usual, e.g., Repaired Permissions, Safe Booted, Cold Booted, Zapped, and ran DiskWarrior. No problems noted, but no resolution either. Copying back via SuperDuper from a verified backup yielded the same results.

Before reinstalling Office 2004, and just for kicks, I wondered what would happen if I connected the printer directly to the PPC. That should, I reasoned, affirm or refute the problem resting with Word.

Bingo! Both computers again print as they once did. At this point, I figured the issue must have been a faulty connection, so I put things back to their original state. But after doing that, the PPC can (again) no longer print.

I can get things to work, but I have no idea what is going on. Why does print sharing only work in “one direction”?  dntknw.gif

Guesses and musings most welcome.

I had a problem a few weeks ago where both of my Epson printers decided to ‘hide’ from the computers. They are connected to my iMac with a powered USB hub. I was finally able to get them to work that way again, buy power cycling the hub, the printers and my iMac. I think the hub was the actual problem. I’ve heard reports that USB will sometimes protect itself by disabling itself when it sees too much of a load on the circuits or some other nebulous reason ( moon phase? ).

Did you by any chance experience a power brown out or even a surge recently? At any rate, try powering everything down for a few seconds and see how it goes. That’s faster than Repairing Permissions, etc. even! smile.gif

Pendragon...I have NO ANSWERS...just a similar situation a few weeks ago. I have Word X for Mac. I got a Word document from a friend and when I tried to open it...Word would flash on the screen as if it were opening and then be gone just as quickly. I tried several times but could not get Word to open. I tried opening Word as if to create a new document and had the same strange behaviour. I finally gave up and just shut everything down. When I turned the computer on the next morning...I went to the document my friend had sent...double clicked on it and Word opened as always and the document was there for the reading. I have no idea what or how...but just chalked it up to mysteries of the software.  huh.gif

XABD,

I know of no brown outs. Had they happened during the day, it is likely I would have heard my UPSs beep. But a dip & surge while I slumber, ah, that is not unheard of (the machines are on 24-7).

So, I did as you suggested. Alas, no joy.  sad.gif

Dolphin,

Your post is good food for thought. I’ll poke around some of the Word forums and see if others have noted the issue. dntknw.gif

Kbear,

Thank yoo

Harv, don't know if this is applicable, but it sounds like it might be:

Thanks Paddy. I'll give that a try, e.g., " Printer sharing works best if the driver for the printer is only installed on the host machine."

P.S. 'Twas worth a try, but no joy. Oh well... dntknw.gif

On the off chance that anyone is following this thread and is curious to know how the story ends...

To make a long story short, I have Little Snitch installed to prevent any undesired Calling Home. Somehow, Little Snitch had been configured to precluded M$ Word from accessing my network. (Well, duh, he says to himself—what a dope.)

A simple reconfiguring of LS and all is again right with the world. cheer.gif

Well, if course! Microsoft was very plainly telling you what the problem was with it's reactions to a print request:
