OT - What are you listening to at the moment?
« Reply #30 on: February 06, 2007, 01:53:40 PM »
Apparently, my taste in music diverges significantly from that of many of the people here... smile.gif

I've ben listening to a lot of VNV Nation lately. They're an electronica/EBM band--highly synthesized, very catchy dance music with thoughtful, introspective lyrics, not a combination one sees very often. They're also die-hard Apple Mac fanatics, and they sequence and record all their music on Apple computers. They even bring Apple Powerbooks with them on tour. I recently wrote a long essay about why I am not Buddhist, inspired by a Twix candy bar and the VNV Nation song "Epicentre;" lyrics to the song are sprinkled throughout the essay.

I've also been spending a lot of time listening to Wumpscutt and A Perfect Circle. Wumpscutt is another electronica/EBM band; A Perfect Circle is a side project of Maynard Keena, lead singer of Tool. A Perfect Circle is not quite as grim and angsty as Tool, but it's pretty close; many A Perfect Circle songs center on alienation and anger.

I also really, really like Holly McNarland, a Canadian neo-folk singer. Neo-folk is almost always relationship processing set to music, and what's not to love about relationship processing?

I've been into Electronica for many years actually.
Now of course the electronic music genre is quite diverse in and of itself and I do shy away from heavy mental/industrial, as much as I shy away from anchovies on my pizza but good pizza, like good sounds are always welcome.

If you have a worm you got to feed it, choosing Buddhism or Twix is really a matter of appetite. yum.gif

Gee, I thought I had wild taste liking Blues, while most of my family prefers classical music.  They all play some sort of instrument, and all play keyboards.
I guess I will leave the electronic music to you youngsters.  But I am looking forward to a class in Garage Band, where we will learn some electronic music, and other genres, from a couple of really good kids in our local high school.  There is a lot of local talent around here, some of the kids are really amazing.  This class will be starting some Sunday morning, soon I hope.  I sure dont mind paying for these classes and supporting the local kids who are into arts and music!
Should be fun.

Heh. I'm pretty sure I don't qualify as a "youngster" by anyone's stretch of the imagination. smile.gif

I've noticed that I tend to like variety in music; a lot of the music I listen to lives on the turbulent edge where different genres come together. I also tend to seek out styles of music where there's a great deal of novelty and innovation, rather than more traditional genres where there's little change. I don't think that's related to age; if anything, the older I get, the more I look for new genres of music.

The other thing I've noticed is that the music I listen to has to have something meaningful to say. Pretty melodies don't cut it; if the artist or group doesn't ave anything to say, it won't hold my interest.

I am the only person in the family who is not musically talented(or artistically either), so I am now thinking that in retirement, I would like to start to take some lessons.
Actually I do play piano somewhat, and would love to take that up again.
The kids have various keyboards that do all sorts of things, and that would be fun.  But first I would start with the basics.
They have and recommend Roland keyboards.
I think this would be a whole lot of fun, now that I have the time.

I do love instrumental music, perhaps thats why there is quite a lot of Jazz that I like.
Anyway, I am looking forward to this, and the kids will help me pick out the Roland keyboard that they think I should have.  Of course, they will pick out the one THEY want, so when they come and visit the grandparents, they will have something decent to play.

Just bought My Name is Buddy by Ry Cooder.  The man is a genius.  A brilliant album.

I can't believe that he doesn't get the commercial success he deserves.  Hopefully the exposure he's recently had on the radio here in the UK will raise his profile a bit

Oddly enough I was listening to a live recording of the Ditty Bops that was recorded last summer in North Lawrence, Kansas last summer!  If I'd have known they were going to play I'd have managed to go and hear them!

Sandyman - I recently found an old Ry Cooder tape in a box in the basement; I don't remember what it was called but it had "Roosevelt in Trinidad" on it!  I'll have to check it out carefully in the car as it's got the best cassette player that I have!

Speaking of Ry Cooder, I just read that he has produced the next album by my favorite female singer:  Mavis Staples.

I am anxiously waiting.

Bryan Ferry in a Channel 4 documentary (EyeTV on the Mac), playing some numbers from his new Dylan tribute album and talking about Bob and his music, as well as clips from his Roxy Music days.

I recorded a tribute to Ry Cooder off Radio 2 recently intending to put it on CD to listen to in the car, but haven't got to it yet!  rolleyes.gif

Well worth listening to  thumbup.gif  I recorded it as well wink.gif .  He was also interviewed on the Mike Harding show last week.  That show is still available on the BBC web site.

I do love old Auntie. There is sooo.. much to read and listen to on the web site.  It makes the license fee a lot more bearable smile.gif

Surprisingly....
Las summer, still in Belgium we went to a festival called Werchter Classic that is promoting older music and have a target rate of 30+ ages, so basicly music from popular bands in 70's and 80's.
We saw a few bands, and although I expected more of some of them, Bryan Ferry with his Roxy Music came out performing best, even in a way better than the main act Simple Minds cause we didn't expected this at all from Bryan Ferry.
The guy has a nice age but gosh, they could still perform live smile.gif
Others were Simply Red (yuk, don't like them anyway and they were bad)
Arsenal (were ok, since I didn't really knew them)
Bryan Adans, who performed he's usual set of dreamingless music, just like listening to a CD actually.
Sting, I really expected so much of him but it was really dissapointing sad.gif

Not really listening to anything now but I do have Depeche Mode loaded on my iPod Shuffle most of the time since they are my all time favorits, their life performances are really awesome and I feel bad to have missed the last one sad.gif

The music I last bought on iTunes is the latest Faithless (surprisingly, much better than I have expected, even I thought they would wear out but they have altered the influence a bit and came out with another great album to listen at) and... "Safety Dance" and "Pop Goes the World" from Men Without Hats tongue.gif
