Language of the "Net"
« on: February 02, 2007, 12:08:13 PM »
Ok, there's no such thing as a stupid question, but this is a silly one that I don't know the answer to. I've seen web pages done in a language other than English. But, are there multiple languages used for the "suffixes" that come after the "dot"? Or does the whole world (www) use ".com" ".org" ".net" ".gov" etc.

(That last one is not part of the list.)
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Found this.

A Suffix Extension in a web page address gives you a clue as to what kind of web page you are visiting. The current suffix extensions available include:

.com = commercial
.net = network
.org = organization
.gov = government

A suffix extension for a country includes the country abbreviation. Suffix extensions with a country code usually abbreviate "com" to "co".

.co.il = Israel
.gov.il = Israel Gov
.co.uk = Britain
.co.ca = Canada

Any day now new extensions will be available for use in web page addresses. They will include:
.art = artist/artwork
.info = information
.biz = commercial
.store = commercial
I think .etc would be terrific.

I think ".usa" is now available, also. Not sure what it's supposed to stand for. dntknw.gif
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system
CAUTION! Childhood vaccinations cause adults! :yes:

If you use the ".usa" and pay an additional fee you can get your info passed through Langley and Fort Meade up to 1ms quicker  whew.gif

The whole of the Net uses English names, because ICANN is an American company, and the system of top-level domains and Web registrars was developed in the United States. That's why even Japanese, Chinese, and other non-Latin-alphabet domains have URLs that are written in English letters.

...any day now...

Good heavens, when was that written? .info has been available for years. We had it for TS but let it lapse when we decided to reign in our extensive budget.
