BIrthday present! New 17 inch iMac!
« on: February 20, 2007, 12:00:27 PM »
I didnt need anything for my birthday, so I got my husband a lovely new iMac, a 17 screen one this morning.
His old ancient iMac, the little bondiblue one we will give to our grandaughter to play games on.

But I forgot that the old one doesnt have Firewire, so I cant transfer his iPhoto(the last summer wedding photos) to the new one?

What is the easiest way to do it?  If its possible.  My external HDs dont have USB.
I guess I could try to network, but his is os 9.
Thanks,
Jane

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Actually he got me Dreamweaver.
Our grandson just turned 8, so have to think of something neat for him.
Been searching for an Original Erector set, we gave our old 60 year old one away, I could kick myself, as those were just amazing.
So we will have to find something new, but along that same line.  We did get him one of the new ones for Christmas. Any ideas?  He is a really mechanical and loves to build stuff.

Oh, I better get back to my husband, and figure out how to transfer those wedding pictures.
Jane

The wedding pictures are just in a folder, there was no iPhoto in those days.  its 866mb.

Jane,

In OS X, the iPhotos are located at Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library. Alas, I recall nada re OS 9.

Still, you can either burn a CD of the iPhoto folder or copy to thumb drive etc., and then copy them to the above OS X folder on the new machine.

Ive got all his photos on the desktop in a folder, but he has not a burner.  And for some reason my thumb drive wont work on his(or my brothers) old iMacs.

I could borrow a USB external hard drive?  Seems thats the olny way.
Then I could pop them right into his iPhoto.

You could connect the two machines using an Ethernet cable and turn on file sharing to transfer the files.

Thanks,
Jane

jcarter, which iMac 17" did you get?

I got one last year, 17" iMac iNtel duo-core 1.83, iCam built-in, 512 mb ram, 160 gig hd, and a 128 mb video.

Love it!   toothgrin.gif

Glad you got a nice puter, and if you stand back away from it and look closely at it, it resembles a polaroid print.

Enjoy jcarter!  Have a Happy one! cheer.gif  clap.gif  yahoo.gif

Who's going to tell Gregg it was "hubby's" birthday.

Somehow, Jane, somehow I really think you'll enjoy that gift far better than a chainsaw, even a new one.   whistling.gif

Anyhow, congrats to the birthday boy . . . we've certainly had a big helping of celebrations heereabouts this month.

There isnt a better birthday present than something like a Mac or Mac related for our family.  Its just a good excuse to get something that you need, or want. Those two words seem to get a bit more similar as we get older,,,,,,,, biggrin.gif

And I know I miss the birthdays here, so Happy Birthday to all TSers, and hope you all get a Mac-like present too.
Jane

Having a problem networking the new one in, but will work on that tomorrow.
Might have to restart these, so they will pick up on the new critter?

Back to the original problem, do you think that if I borrow or get a small USB external HD, that this would allow us to grab the music and photos off the old OS 9 Mac?
Jane

I just found that the reason that my little thumb drive, flash drive, whatever you call the little thingies, wont work on the old macs as its a different version of USB.  Plug it in and it wont show up on the desktop, on either this old iMac nor my brother's old one.
So the only way to get those pictures off that machine, is to take the hard drive out, and put it into our daughter's Mac, but that means a drive to Boston.

Or the other option, is to upload the best of the pictures to our Shutterfly or Club Photo account, and have them make a CD from them, rather than make prints. So thats what I will do most likely.  So I better get started picking out the best, as there are about 200 of these wedding pictures.

I am going to keep these instructions, as there are a lot of people upgrading from these old slotloading whatevers, and finding that the USB is not compatible.
