Daylight Saving Time
« on: March 03, 2007, 08:42:07 PM »
You might want to switch to manual adjustment of DST so your Mac doesn't get confused in April after you've manually changed the time next weekend. My (OS9) Date & Time Control Panel had "Set Daylight-Saving Time Automatically" unchecked anyway. I just checked it, er, looked at it.

Some folks are spreading Y2K like fears about computer times being thrown into disarray. I don't recommend checking into a hospital ever, but especially not next weekend. You could get your medication an hour late! eek2.gif

Thanks, Gregg. I turned it off. But what's the point of it? If the clock is set to check with a network time server, it should match the thing whether DST is checked or not, shouldn't it?

The Time server doesn't tell your computer what time it is in your time zone. Nor does it tell it that DST is in effect. It simply tells it the time in Greenwich, England, what used to be called Zulu time. Your computer ( whether Mac or PC must then determine from the stored date and the stored database in it and your setting for DST updating, whether to change the displayed time or not. The recent updates from Apple ( as well as most other computer and OS makers ) is to update that database since the law in the US changed this year. But, that same database includes the rest of the known universe, also. I know it's hard to believe, but there are other countries, even in this World and they may not use the same time periods for DST. That's why the Time settings ask you to tell it where ( in the world ) you'll be using the computer.

If you change the time manually and you leave the DST settings enabled, you'll get another time change when the old database is accessed because it doesn't know the law changed. For all it knows, you just changed the time because you moved to another time zone.

So, your choices are:
1. Update that database
2. Disable automatic DST and change the time yourself
3. Use a granular silicon-based, gravity powered time keeping device

Without changing the local time, some programs may get confused by the 'time stamps' ( usually GMT ) that indicate that the file/doc is created in the 'future'. smile.gif

And the United States = The Banana system

Doesn't amount to a hill o' beans with OS 9. I ran 9's Software Update, and I wasn't disappointed — nothing happened.

2. Twice a year? Every year?!! @#$%^%$&*(^%$.
3. But if it's in a really deep coal mine, gravity is different, so the clock would be wrong. How am I supposed to know how deep the mine is and the time zone it's in? Congress didn't bother with the important stuff like that, did it?

A while ago I had a pile of spam dumped on me that was — will be — created in 2036 or thereabouts. And here I had blamed it all on John Titor. sheeprope.gif

I don't believe in daylight savings.

Hardly a big deal in OS X since this issue has been fixed since 10.4.6 or 10.4.7, but curiously, the fix did not migrate to iCal.

In iCal (US Holidays), April 1 is still shown as the date Daylight Saving Time Begins. Since Apple creates the US Holidays calendar, the calendar cannot be (easily) edited/corrected.

I suppose (hope) this bug will get squashed in the next version of iCal. dntknw.gif

It's just another way to complicate things in life that shouldn't be all that complicated to begin with.

The way things have been going, they may just scrap Standard Time. wink.gif

DST should be called Energy Saving Time. It really does have an economic impact.

This was tried back in the early 70s.

After 1 yr. the idea was scrapped when 6 & 7 year olds were leaving for school before sun up in Dec. and Jan. oops.gif

You can get more info. on the history of Daylight Savings Time here.  smile.gif

Every time DST discussion comes up I remember an incident back in 1959.

My family was driving to Florida in July to visit my grandparents. We had stopped at a motel in North Carolina the first night and were enjoying a dip in the pool after a long day in the car.
A guy sitting poolside asked my Dad what time it was, he looked at his watch and told him the hour. The guy called out to his wife and kids and yelled that they were going to be late and they had to quickly get out of the pool and get going.

It wasn't until later that eve that we realized North Carolina did not observe DST and it was locally an hour earlier than what my Dad had told that man. Fortunately we didn't  encounter the guy before we left the next day but I'm sure he would have had words for us.
