Two printers

Setup:
 OS X 10.4.8
Processor Dual 1Ghz Power PC G4
Memory 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM
Two Maxtor 80 GB HDD
My main drive runs on Tiger the reserve drive runs on Panther.
Originally when all things were running smoothly my Canon Pixma  iP4200 worked well when using either drive, then for some  unaccountable reason it refused to work when using the Tiger drive but continued to work ok when using Panther.
I have tried all ways to try and cure the problem but to no avail. I have removed all trace of anything with the name Canon from the Tiger drive and then reinstalled from it's setup disk again no joy.
Next I tried installing an HP Deskjet 5650 but on adding printer up comes the message in the Printer Browser " an error occurred while trying to add the selected printer" and below that message is the sentence:
successful-ok-conflicting- attributes[attachment=181:attachment]

I have no experience with your printers, so 'tis only a guess, but...

Perhaps Printer Setup Repair is worth a try.

You seem to be trying to add a printer when in the middle of trying to print. I suppose things can be done that way, never tried. However, I suggest doing it the 'normal' way and see if it helps.

1. Close any print dialogs.
2. Open Apple's Printer Utility ( probably in the Apple Utility folder ) and if the printer is already there ( which I doubt ), delete it. Now use the "Add" button to find and add the printer, with the appropriate printer capabilities, if any, to the available printer list.

Step two assumes that you have previously installed the printers driver software, of course. But if you haven't, it will never show up, anyway...

Apple's Printer Utility is not very useful in editing any of the critical info on an installed printer, it's usually necessary to delete and re-add, especially for an IP addressed printer. YMMV for Rendezvous enable printers. And the utility Harv mentioned may make things easier, I downloaded it but never used it!

You could always go here: http://127.0.0.1:631/printers

or here: http://127.0.0.1:631/admin

log in as root followed by root's password.

Mind you, you need to do a little reading first.

All is well thanks to none other than Harv who suggested that I open up a new user a/c and install the printer using it's installation disk and bingo it worked.
