http://tips4mac.blogspot.com/2007/03/trans...to-another.html

This is a forum that I watch, its on one of my widgets, and I found this to be interesting.  I dont really understand it, but I wonder if this could be a reason that some people are not using iWeb.

I think I will take their advice and not use it until the new version is out.  Or if I do, I wont upload the site right away.

What do you all think about this?
Jane

I don't think it's a new problem. Just one of many that most people don't realize until too late. iWeb is simply not a commercial grade web site development tool. It is great for someone who wants a quick, nice looking family site ( note the singular ). It's easy to use, but it won't teach you anything but how to expect great looking sites without knowing anything about planning, design, efficiency, portability, usability/accessibility, and content. It was not designed for any of that, however. It does exactly what Apple intended it to do; easily 'make pretty'. I consider it a toy. Other than that, it's great! smile.gif But that's just my ( and several other peoples ) opinion.

Now that I am really learning Dreamweaver, and after reading that about iWeb, I shall stick with DW.  I do still have GoLive, and might give that a try too, I know I would understand more now that I have learned more about web stuff.
I did whisk iWeb out of my dock, so I wouldnt see it anyway.

iWeb has the goofiest site structure of any program I've ever attempted to use - definitely completely non-standard and therefore extremely tricky to transfer anything to another program.

GoLive and DW are more similar than different - both work very well to manage larger sites and are Clydesdales compared to iWeb's fluffy stuffed toy horse. Devilish2.gif (can you tell I don't like iWeb?)

OMG, I just went through that!  I ended up taking down my home server and giving it to my daughter.  Mean while, I transfered my web sites to my new server..... Uh, how do I get iWeb on the MDD to edit the web sites, I wondered.  I had to find a similar article that explained the domain file and then all was better.

Now, I find out that you can actually choose which file or web site if you change the name of the domain file.  I think I'll try this or the little program mentioned.

iWeb is good for home pages and the average consumer, makes nice pages easily.  But, is not intended for Pro use at all.

Hi Jane, definitely stick to Dreamweaver for a more powerful and more professional outcome.  Nice learning curve thou.  wink.gif

Hi Al,  Thanks, I think DW wins for me, as more people have recommended it by far.
And we do have a great instructor, and I also use that www.lynda.com movie tut site.

The only thing I am having trouble with is on my webhost, (I am using CyberDuck for uploading), is figuring out what has to go in folders, what doesnt, what links to what, whew,,,,,,,its not easy yet. I also think Ive made some duplicate files by mistake.  It all started when I tried RapidWeaver and it created an index page before I wanted it to.  Then I couldnt see all my files on the site.  The Parent Directory.  But people explained it here, that I would want an index and then everybody couldnt see what was on my pages.  For some things, they would have to have the exact URL typed in.
So now, I am figuring out how to keep things separate, and how to link and not to link.
Jane

Your "great" instructor needs to go over 'relative' and 'absolute' URL's and how to use each. That's usually covered even before discussing html tags. dntknw.gif It's the whole basis for "hyperlinks", and without understanding them, you'll be swimming against the flow. But to actually define your links, you must also understand how to set up the file/directory structure you want to use on the server. And that's really exactly how you would do it on your Mac, so that's not difficult.

I highly recommend "HTML & XHTML, The Definitive Guide" published by O'Reilly, probably now in its 5th or 6th edition. Could be the best $35 you can spend. smile.gif

Oh, I sure will get this!
There is one student who is really lost and I am trying to help her, and its helping me, and I realize that this is rather difficult.  Its not the Dreamweaver thats trying us now, its this directory/folder stuff.
Thank you!
Jane
