can\'t drag to trash
« on: February 13, 2003, 04:47:00 AM »
Why is it that in OSX, I'm not allowed to drag about 80 megs worth of asian-looking fonts to the trash.  I'm told that I can't drag them to the trash becuse they can't be deleted.  I'm not sure which Font folder they're from.  I did a search for Fonts and then double-clicked the folders.  I couldn't see the path to the folder.

A bit of an answer…Try this:

1.Open up your OS X Hard Drive.
2. Go to the View Menu Bar and select “Customize Toolbar.”
3. If it is not already not there, drag “path” to the Toolbar.
4. From then on, once an item is highlighted, all you need to do is click on the “Path” icon that is now toolbar, and the path of that file should be revealed.

But what it takes to remove those items (fonts) installed or owned by the system and whether they can or should be removed, well, I dunno. So I too will await the solution.

Sorry for the partial answer.

The reason you can not drag them to the Trash is that they're system fonts and owned by the System.

They are here: /System/Library/Fonts

Messing around in the OS X system folder is not a good idea if you're still unfamiliar with it. This fonts folder should not be modified. The whole System folder is protected so even if you change ownership of the fonts themselves from System to yourself, you'll still be unable to move them to the trash.

Only the root user can do it. If you enabled that user, then you could do it. If you're unfamilliar with the concept of the root user, then I would highly recommend reading up on it first.

In finding the path, I do have the "Path" in the toolbar, but when clicking on it, all I get is "Search results for 'Fonts'."  It still won't give me the path.

Csonni, I really haven't a clue why the path doesn't show up, but perhaps switching the View (icons, list, columns) will help.
