That's just on the surface, wait till you see what else it can do! In my opinion, the Dock was designed simply to show off the core animation and other candy. It does a good job of that, but it's not exteremely flexible and icons have been pushed about as far as they can go. Text is just find for lists of apps/files/folders/etc. and you can have the icons on there, if you want. Frankly, I can't remember what all the icons for all my apps look like ( especially when they get real small ), but it's pretty easy to read the label! laugh.gif But some people like them and even use icon view in the Finder. I use one pragmatic rule that if I don't use something at least every 2-3 days, it doesn't belong in the dock. The corollary is that docks on PBs ain't supposed to be as big as those on 24" iMacIntels, or as Harv like to say, the 2' iMacIntels! coolio.gif

I'm not at home this week, so here's my on-the-road PB's assemblage.

The Documents and Applications folders have ALL the "stuff" I need periodically, aka, less than often, more than never. The 2 icon-less folders are my collection of GIFS and JPEGS for e-messagesm and my Stationery Pad

Plus, of course, I do have a LOT OF (working) FILES scattered about the DT. Have thought about collecting them in a separate folder in the dock, but haven't ever tried it.

I tried DragThing a long time ago, but kept getting my "fingers" pinched in all the drawers . . . or sumthin'.

My mileage, clearly, does vary.

On my G5, my dock looks a lot like Kris' - crammed. I use it constantly, because I'm constantly switching between various apps and documents when working on web sites. I'd be lost without it. On this MacBook Pro, I've not really got completely up to speed - it's not "fully loaded" yet - I've been toting around my external FW drive because I haven't had time to get this all sorted out with the move.

My G5 got taken out of the box this afternoon - but the movers were at the new house unloading until after 7:30 pm, so I didn't get much farther than that!!

Jane it pops in and out as needed, the more you put in the dock the smaller the icons get. I use just about everyone of those applications every day. Three browsers for checking websites, the full adobe suite, MacOffice, acrobat, stuffit, epson smart-panels, siverkeeper, network utilities, iListen, calculator, VPC, and the apple programs. Alias folders to Documents, Mov, Music, Photos, Text on the right side of the screen for projects defined by subject and or date.

Thanks to krissel's suggestion I use Drop Drawers. This places tabs (drawers) along the side of the monitor. Each drawer contains what are basically holds a several aliases of folders, files, and apps grouped according to type. For example, Internet contains browsers and files for iChat, etc. Each drawer is represented by a tab and I can choose any color I want for a tab.  I  hide the dock as I do not find it useful.

I have ~ 50 additional ikcons on my desktop that I am moving into DropDrawers leaving me with a clean desktop.

My dock - on the iBook is full of everything - including games for the girls!!!

I think my most useful app is Downsize.  Love it!  Much better than the one on iPhoto.

Well, I'm no 'power-user', but I often have BBEdit, FF, Fetch, Elements open at the same time. Plus each start up opens URLMP, Spamsieve, Excalibur, SpeedDownload, Typinator, Increase and PandoCalendar. But I still don't use the Dock to switch between apps because the command-tab works so well, and the icons are usually much bigger than what's in the Dock. And all the usual Quit/Hide/etc. command keys work without even making the app visible. Can't remember where I heard about command-tab, but it seems to be a well hidden but extremely useful function, whether one uses the Dock or not! clap.gif

I use DropDrawers for aliases also but mostly for collecting URLS so they are available for all purposes at any time. (Yes, Jim, I know about URL manager wink.gif) Also keep clippings of common replies to questions at TS. They run up the right side and a few at the bottom right. Set them to be translucent so they aren't too obnoxious.  smile.gif

This whole topic relates well to the one abut the survey about how we search in X. Seems Apple ( and the genius developers ) have ( to use the British plural ) created a system that is almost too easy to use in multiple ways! Ain't it nice to have such choice? clap.gif
