How do you use the search functions on your Mac? Got the following last week and it seems ligit. Although it was sent to our MUG, I see no reason not to encourage any Mac user to take the short survey. It's pretty quick, but you need javascript enabled, at least down to the domain level.

At the risk of repeating your research, Jim, searching the Sheffield University site turned up this page about his project and this link lists him among the people involved, so it seems genuine. I'll look at his survey later - off to find something to eat now... wink.gif

So do you actually know how many files are on your computer - or did you just take an educated guess? Just did a Spotlight search for ".jpg" and got nearly 15,000, so there's probably about 20,000 files on the G5. Time for a spring clean, I guess smile.gif

I found that question somewhat difficult to understand. I remembered it as asking how many user-created folders/sub-folders one might have as opposed to how many user-created files. However, another MUG member suggested the same understanding as you do, Neil. At first, I suspected a 'language' problem, but it now appears that the 'problem' may be somewhere between my ears! eek2.gif

I suppose the only way to really know would be to record the files/folders number found in Disk Utility. Then, completely erase the drive and make a pure OS install. Next install all updates and programs/hacks. Finally, re-run DU and record the new numbers. The difference should pretty much define what you had added. Be sure and let me know what values you get, preferably by late tonight! eek2.gif laugh.gif tongue.gif

I spent a couple of moments identifying that it was not until 104.x that I gave up the old way of stashing Docs on a separate partition (how could I have doubted the craftsmen who wrote of OSX), but that I still "hold" my most active working files directly on my DT (no aliases)!

Yeah, I wonder what he's aiming for/at/against???

It has been reported that any icons floating around on the Desktop ( aliases or not ) cause System slowdown. Of course, you guys with super fast cpu's probably couldn't care less...smile.gif

Much to my great surprise I found (via Suoer GetInfo) about a total of 1e6 files on all my drives (not including backup).   Groaner.gif  My boot drive contained about 850,000 files. So, I estimated the above number for total files. Hurt.gif

Now, I am in the process of trying to get rid of many of these files and folders that go back to at least 1990!  eek2.gif  tears.gif  Anyone have any ideas nut trying to identify the files one by one?

Tom, I don't know if it was a typo but your 1e6 set me off looking for some mathematical definition.

You could try the system a neighbour used when he was moving away. He hired a skip



(I think you'd call it a dumpster). His logic was "if I haven't used it in the 10 years I've lived here, I never will... why pay to move rubbish to a new home?" and had a massive clearout.

Try setting your folder lists to "last modified...." wink.gif
