itunes library on a network drive
« on: April 12, 2007, 09:46:16 AM »
Trying to get my WD netcenter to use as my library for itunes.
You can of course choose this location and copy your library to the ext. drive but it doesnot work.
On reopening iTunes the library is not loaded and a new library is made on the internal drive (even if you deleted it first).
so is it possible or?

• Make an alias to the iTunes music folder on the external drive.
• Delete the local iTunes folder
• Move the alias folder to your local music folder and remove the alias from the folder's name, so instead of your folder being named iTunes alias, it will just be called iTunes. The folder will still remain an alias folder, but the name of the folder just won't display alias. It will still have the little arrow on the lower left hand corner of the folder, indicating that it is an alias.
• Now open iTunes and it should work perfectly. Just be advised, opening iTunes from the same folder on multiple workstations could possibly corrupt the iTunes Music Library file (the file that stores all of your song information, etc.), messing up your playlists and forcing you to have to possibly reimport all of your music and song information/album art/etc.

Good Luck!

There is a nice write up on this at Lifehacker:

http://lifehacker.com/software/itunes/ultr...rive-238296.php

I haven't done it so I have no personal knowledge of it; If I can get my NAS drive to be recognized under OS X this might be a fun thing to do!

I've done it in the past and it has worked for me.

I'm not sure if I understand the question, but I have my iTunes music folder on an external drive.  It works just fine. So it can be done.

I did it so long ago I don't remember the details, but I believe I used the instructions found here.
