Veizon FiOS and Macs...
« on: April 13, 2007, 07:12:03 PM »
The topic of switching Internet, Telephone, and Television service providers from Cablevision [and regular Verizon telepone service] to Verizon FiOS.
I remember reading that Verizon FiOS is NOT Mac compatible.

Anyone have any experiences with FiOS?

Can't say from first hand experience, but. it says here that it is compatible with Macs--beginning with OS 10.3.

EDIT:  Humm, at the bottom of that page, it says:
QUOTE
Wireless adapters are not supported for Macintosh.

Oh man, that help section is a mess. rolleyes.gif

In the chart on the 5 Mbps box for frontside bus it says 128 minimum but 100 suggested? huh.gif

Try to follow that 'check your specs on the Macintosh manually' and you get a blank page with the question as to whether this answered your question.

Guess that's an indication of the service you'll receive. wink.gif

i don't think the speed of my mac is really the problem
i think a Core Duo can handle FiOS pretty well.
I clocked 50mbps DOWNLOAD speed once over the internet though a CAT5 connection and a college network on my computer through a T1 line i believe.
(if that made any sense...)

If i call Verizon for support, they're probably going to blow me away.
Verizon never had good customer support.

Really? I've had good support from Verizon about 95% of the time from their Mac people. (There's a prompt for Mac OS.) I guess it's true--YMMV.

I have had VERY good service from Verizon, of course when it was first installed I found that the tech support was very vauge, but then the right tech, an “IBM” lady took care of everything, not only did I receive a credit for two months, and the next day a Verizon field worker pulled a new dedicated line from the splice box to the modem at no charge!

Yes, IMHO, Verizon is doing a great job here in Southern California.

The last I heard of FiOS is they are still working on the compatibility of their modem and the Mac, and things are looking good! As with all Mac’s, we the user must wait, but at 55, I'm use to waiting. ;~)’
So many Mac’s, so little time!
