I've heard that the glue used for "post-it" notes was a failed attempt to develop a stronger adhesive. But, when someone realized there was a use for it, it became a brilliant invention.

I've seen this list floating around the Internet a few times. Some of the quotations on it are true (Lord Kelvin really did believe heavier-than-air flying machines were impossible), but many of them are not.

Most notably, the patent commissioner never said "Everything that can be invented has been invented;" this myth is even debunked on its own page, here.

Ditto for "640K ought to be enough for anyone." Bill Gates, as myopic as he is, simply never said that. In fact, he's given many interviews strenuously denying it, and nobody has ever turned up any source that can attribute that quote to him. There's more information on that myth here.

The Popular Mechanics quote is true, but is not as silly as it seems taken out of context. The article was specifically referring to computers that came a generation after the ENIAC; in that narrow a scope, it's correct and not silly at all. It's only silly when it's taken out of context, at which point it seems to be an open-ended statement about the indefinite future.

Anything you read anywhere, especially on the Internet, should be approached skeptically; these sayings have an undeniable emotional appeal, and we love to look back and snicker on those who we think of as less wise than we are, but a lot of these supposed "quotes" just aren't true.

Sounds like you're paraphrasing something Philadelphia Phillies Hall of Fame Outfielder and Broadcaster, Richie Ashburn, used to say:  "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." wink.gif

Story goes that the well-known wit Oscar Wilde heard someone make a smart remark and said to a friend: "I wish I'd said that." Friend replied: "You will, Oscar, you will..."
