Wake-up + connection problem

This "leading" question I post with a dollop of trepidation . . . fearing that Harv or RNKiii will take advantage!   harhar.gif

The question is . . .”Do I have a problem . . .”

The associated facts:
  • before we installed our whiz-bang new 11.n Airport Extreme Base Station
  • we had a yurt-shaped AEBS “experience’ WITH both  a DSL modem and, subsequently our new cable modem, with the result that
  • connection to the ‘net “seemed” to be uninterrupted 24/7, so that, e.g., waking our Macs from sleep in the morning effected an instantaneous 'net connection
Now, however, there is no connection until we wait for, well, an eternity in web-years, say 12-15 seconds. Wanna get on-line quickly? Turn Airport OFF/ON and that will do it, every time. Otherwise . . .tic . . .tock . . tic . . tock

So, the question, again, “Do I have a problem with a) the new AEBS and/or cable . . . or both? Are there some settings for the AEBS that I haven’t yet found that I can/should adjust to get back to status quo ante re: the wake-up connection?"

My experience with our 'yurt' matches yours; it just works. However, only the iBook sleeps, the iMac just blacks out the screen. It's running an app that may be contacting the home base several times a night and that may affect how available the internet actually is. dntknw.gif

1. Do you know how often Comcast is assigning your IP address?
2. Have you tried entering the DNS server address(es) that Comcast uses in the Network Pref Pane? It's normally an optional entry but if you can find out their address(es), it may be faster than waiting for the Mac to figure it out. dntknw.gif
3. Are you leaving any internet accessing apps open during the 'sleep'?
4. Why are your Mac's set to sleep instead of shutdown, anyway? Part of your need for speed? tongue.gif ( see below )

Me thinks you may need to take some 'patience' pills, anyway. How fast does the AEBS take to run its start up routines? Probably at least 5 - 8 seconds? Add the time to open the Utility and select that option. You're probably saving 3 - 6 seconds! WOW.gif Just send me your AEBS and I'll check it out for you for a few months! laugh.gif

12-15 seconds.... an eternity??? My iBook takes somewhere around that same amount of time to figure out where it is, why it is, and then how it's feeling, maybe it wants another sip of coffee, and then, wham!!!! Rockin'!!!

But, that is on what is now, ancient technology, an Airport Extreme 811.g harhar.gif

  3. I think so, now that you mention it, but arranging it should be a no-braine(something for which I'm uniquely qualified)

 Think of it more as a comfortable habit, rather than a "patience deficit".

Naturalist Observation Nr. 1:
Having taken pains to assure that Firefox was ON when both of my Macs went to asleep, it was reassuring to be able to confirm that ABD/CK's assertion/query was operative (and reliable) when we, all, were awakened, this morning.

 As soon as I touched "any key" "we" were off and running. 'Twas apparent that despite my puzzlement(s) to the contrary, the AEBS does not "sleep" nor does it need any settings adjustment.   eek2.gif

My aluminum 15" PowerBook looses connection to my "new" AirPort Extreme base station too. My son also has the latest AirPort base station but he doesn't have the problem. However, his MacBook Pro has a different AirPort card than my PB.

After talking with him about it, I've come to the conclusion that the problem lies with my PB and not the base station.

Some times the connection stays put. Other times I have to click on the Menu Bar icon to re-establish the connection. Then there are times when a restart is the only way to get in back. Turning the PB AirPort card off... then back on hasn't worked for me.
