Europe Pictures - - - Finally!
« on: February 07, 2003, 10:07:00 PM »
Hi everyone!

I finally have some of my pictures from Europe posted on my website.  So far I have 27 pictures...  I have over 600 total pictures, but there is no way I am going to scan every single one of them!!  I will be scanning more pictures soon I hope.

A problem though...  Every picture is over 100k when downloaded to a hard drive...  However I optimized them for the web, and on my hard drive it shows them as around 50k (give or take).  Why is it that the size is different on the web than my hard drive?

Splendid, Jay. It's nice to know what you were up to following that day you said "Farewell" to TS last summer, through the day you again said "Hello!"

What a delightful journey.

All our trips to Western Europe have been primarily by car or rail, but your pictures surely revived some wonder-full memories.

Thank you so much for making these available. I'll be looking for the next "Chapter(s)".

Jay,

Absolutely wonderful, loved the page design and the Euro pics.

Note: Maybe you can look into this. Safari crashed on me after viewing your Flash portfolio and after I tried to leave your page.

Thanks for sharing your pictures, Jay! Beautiful! I would love to make a trip like that.

I don't quite understand your question about the file size of the pictures. But it could be that you're seeing the size difference due to the way a Mac file includes a directory file. When you upload the file to an Internet server, which is likely a UNIX box, the directory stuff is stripped away, making the file a bit smaller.

I had the same problem with Safari quitting after I visited your web site.

Jay.  you really have some nice work on your site. The pictures of Europe are beautiful though they took several minutes per page to load on dialup. They definitely were worth the wait. They show you have a good eye for composition.

Your portfolio has impressive examples and you surely deserve employment in the graphics field.  One thing I noted in your resume is the reference to the time you spent working with kids in the learning center and your time managing the market. I know you want to emphasize the graphics knowledge but this shows your real-life job experience in a variety of responsibilities. Don't underestimate the importance of these qualifications. A potential employer will look favorably on these items and you might want to keep that in mind when you interview.

Best of luck in your search for work.
I know that if I were your age in today's economy I'd be nervous about getting work but I have a feeling you will do alright.

Thanks everyone, and thanks Krissel, that means a lot!  I am having a hard time finding a job in the graphics field...  Hopefully I will find something soon though.

As for the pictures taking a while to load...  I don't really know what is going on with that.  On my hard drive, each picture is around 50k (some a litle larger), however when I download the picture from my site onto my desktop, it says it is much larger.  I don't know how to explain this any better...  It's pretty weird.

As for my site crashing in Safari - i have noticed that too.  But it only crashes in Safari, none of my other web browsers I have tested it in (NS, IE, OW).  Could it just be a bug with Safari at the moment seeing as how it is only in beta still?

Hi Jay,
Very nice job! :-)

I believe the difference you are seeing in file size is because of the way the Mac files have two forks - the data and the resouce forks. When you upload them to a server, the resource fork is stripped away. This leaves you with a smaller file size.

I could be mistaken, but if memory serves, this is what you are seeing in your file sizes.

Thanks,
Troy

Jay.
Very nice pictures!

You mentioned about being confused on the size difference [when downloading] of your pics.
I don't really have an answer to this but just out of curiosity I downloaded one of your pics (Europe_10.jpg).
I see troy_mac could have the answer!

In Jag using IE = 188k
In 9.2.2. using IE = 72k
In 9.2.2. using NS = 44k

Troy, thanks but the file is smaller on my hard drive, not on the server after upload.

Here is an example.  Similar to what Bill did - On my hard drive, europe_10.jpg is 44k.  When I download that file from my site, the file info says it is 188k.  I hope I can figure this out because I don't want people to wait to see the pictures.  Also I dont want potential employers who might look at my site be like "Ugh!  This pee-on doesn't know squat about web site design.  Why, just look at these large file sizes.  Let's just put his resume in the circular file cabinet!"

Okay, maybe it wont be to that extreme...  But I want the site to be perfect haha.

Jay, have you considered using three links on the first page to three pages of  thumbnails which upon click will open each picture full size on a separate page? That would load the page quicker and then each individual page would open relatively fast with only one pic on it. The access wouldn't really be quicker total timewise, but it would give the impression of speed.
