Thunderbird may not be as mature as Eudora, but at least Eudora has these size settings available for every account you might be checking.
It's been a few years since I used Eudora, but that's what I remember about how it handled large messages, and also how it would delete from server. I've got to find my serial number so I can reinstall and use it.
Since TB/Mozilla inherited the code for Eudora, my hope was that we would shortly see a very robust TB available. So far, I've not seen or read anything to indicate TB will go in this direction. It's very, very discouraging. I truly dislike the "look" of Eudora, and that's why I stopped using it. I'm becoming frustrated with the lack of several things in TB and am about ready to live with CandylandEudora.

Then, and this is the important part and possibly a solution for you, I must once again download/check for messages ( command-m ). Those two actions tell Eudora to disregard the size limit for that specific message, which is, of course, still on the server.
I tried this and it wasn't working. I'm thinking perhaps my prefs had become corrupted as reinstalling them seemed to make things function correctly (click the link and the message comes right in). This is the 2nd time in the past few weeks that I've had to reinstall my TB prefs. It's becoming ... annoying.

My wife can sympathize with you frustration with High School reunion emails! Fortunately, hers was a very small class!
My class was one of the largest to graduate from my HS, but it's still small by comparison to larger HS's.
We have 103 classmates on this list and no one has thought of setting up an email list anywhere. I'd volunteer (could do it through our domain), but ...
I don't care that much about these folks. Ummm ... well, that's the truth. Haven't been in touch in 40 yrs. and likely won't make this reunion or the next several.

I doubt that you'll ever get the message across to the majority, their probably still amazed that the whole thing even works!
hehehehehehehehehe Yeah, the worst offender is the guy who started all this. He makes his living writing code/programs and he couldn't figure out how to send a simple listing of names/address. I was ROFL at the antics he went through. No less than 8 (yes,
eight!) copies came through (from him) before someone's daughter took pity on her dad and converted it to a RTF file. HAHAHAHA!

Even my MoM keeps sending me "winmail 1.dat" files.
Oh no!
Okay, I'm off to see if I can find my Eudora stuff. Like I don't have enough to do this week.
