Elvis Presley having hysterics trying to sing Lonesome Tonight after he adlibs "Do you look in the mirror and wish you had hair...." It was requested by a listener on the BBC's annual TV and radio charity marathon for
Children in Need.
Kimmer - funnily enough yesterday I watched most of the three hours of a BBC series called
Folk Britannia (recorded on the iMac). The first hour was about how British singers picked up on the American blues and folk scene. I've still got a mono LP of the Limelighters in my collection...
Early 60s, I saw quite a few Americans (mostly at the Royal Festival Hall in London) who did very well over here. Ones that spring to mind are Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee (sp?), Ramblin Jack Elliott, Pete Seeger and Weavers. Sadly I didn't keep programmes to remind me who else I saw.
Strangely, one of the most memorable songs performed by any act was "This Land is Your Land..." where the whole audience seemed to know all the words and joined in. Strange, because it wasn't "Our" land they were singing about
Now radio's playing Eva Cassidy's version of Over The Rainbow. Beautiful.
That's enough for now, I think!
