Can't set Netscape 7.2 as default browser
« on: June 08, 2007, 06:22:49 PM »
Hi guys,

Does anyone know how to do this? When I installed it, I was asked if I wanted to set Nescape 7.2 as my default browser and I did not do so, as I thought I would have the option later. But no such luck...! The Netscape Help Menu is no help at all, as it (erroneously) says I can set it as default browser from Edit>Preferences>Navigator. Actually, the Prefs in Netscape (at least in my system, OS 10.1) are under the Netscape Menu, and setting the default browser is not an option there under Navigator or anywhere else. Any suggestions?

Yeah, Apple got pretty sneaky with this one. You have to start Safari, go into the Safari Menu->preferences->general. You'll be able to select your default browser from there. smile.gif

BTW, to set a default email client other than Mail, do the same thing under Mail Preferences->general...

Thanks Rob, but I don't have Safari yet. It won't run under OS 10.1, or so I was told when I tried to download it...!

Francine, from a quick look on Google, for 10.1, it appears that you need to set the preferences via:

System preferences -> Internet -> Web -> Default browser

The preference pane has changed since then - there is no longer any ability to set default browsers via the system prefs (there is no "Web" option) and Rob is correct about how one goes about doing it in later versions of OS X.

Let us know if this works! smile.gif

Interesting. I never used 10.1--I began my OS 10 days with Jaguar. It never occurred to me that things were different "back in the day."

Oh thanks...! More useful info (I am such a newbie right now).

Rob's info turned out to be helpful after all. Even though I don't have Safari, I was able to change the default browser in icab's prefs. I just checked the System prefs and I see Netscape is now indicated as the default there as well.

Cheers,

Interesting. I know Firefox allows you to make sure that it's the default browser:

I assume if FF wasn't the default browser, it would give me the option to change it at that point. I had looked through Netscape, but couldn't find a similar preference.
