What am I running...?
« on: June 20, 2007, 01:20:37 PM »
Hi guys,

I know this is really a lame question, but I can't find my log book at this moment. The question is: I don't remember whether I installed OS 10.1 on  the two partitions of my external HD, or if I just installed it on my internal HD. I am about to backup my internal drive on the Lacie (which is why I bought it originally, not as a boot volume) prior to installing OS 10.3.

But...I can't seem to figure out how to determine if OS 10.1 is installed on the Lacie. How can I tell, apart from booting from the Lacie?

Thanks,
Francine

Not sure about 10.1, but look in System/Library/Coreservices - check the version of the Finder.

Hmm...

I just checked, and the telltale OS X folder called "System,"  with the Library folder and all the new stuff within, is not on my Lacie, only the old OS 9.1 System Folder. So I guess I answered my own question...!

Francine, just run Carbon Copy Cloner and clone your old system from the HD to the external drive. (make sure you check the "make bootable" option) No separate installation required. smile.gif

You know...I did just that this evening. I haven't tried yet to boot from one of the cloned volumes; will do so tomorrow. One thing, though: What are the essential files that you need to make a bootable volume? CCC lists just about everything. I figured: System Folder(folder) and System (folder), maybe the desktop DB, users, a couple of others. I did check "make bootable" and "bless System folder."

Can anyone make a list of essentials for a bootable volume?

No need to try to list them, that's what CCC does for you and why you'd use it! smile.gif Let the app do its thing and enjoy not having to keep up with such a list! eusa_dance.gif

Not that you need this info now but you can open the Startup Disk panel in System Prefs and see what OSes are recognized there if you are unsure of what is installed where.

Thanks - Yeah...I finally noodled around and found out that my Lacie is running OS 9.2.1 on both partitions.

And there's the "About this Mac" item in the extreme left-hand end of the menu bar. If the Apple is blue, I think it's X, didn't 9 still have the multi-colored one? Or had they switched to the 'silver' one? dntknw.gif 'Smater of fact, that icon might have been at the other end of the bar! Had 'a few too many' to remember where that thing was! smile.gif
