AT & T Yahoo Boohoo
« on: June 20, 2007, 10:21:14 PM »
For the past week I am often unable to send email. The server is AT&T Yahoo. I use Outlook Express 5 on my Mac, system 9.2.  I get a message:"5.7.0 authentication failed." Later I can send OK. No problems receiving email. I tried unchecking "authentication required." No difference. Tech support, probably located in Phillippines or India, suggested changing some of my email configurations. Their suggestions are totally wrong. Does anyone know why their tech support is so inept?  More importantly, does anyone know how to solve the problem, and why it works some of the time but not all the time? Thanks.

Try changing the out port to 587 + checking "my server requires authentication"

here's a list of smtp servers, with at&t you never know if they pulled a switch.

Also... if your region has recently been involved in a merger transaction they may have changed your password.
This marketing strategy has been reported all over the nation. Then, you call in and they have a shot at selling you something new or resigning you to a new contract.

I'd like to thank you for the ONLY knowledgeable response I have received on this. The 587 thing worked immediately. Can you explain what changing it to 587 means (in layman's terms)? And why is it that the 25 out port (the default setting) works sometimes but not always? My simple brain thinks that a wrong setting will result in it never working.

Maybe it's because when you come here, you're using your good ear. wink.gif

Intermittent problems are the most vexing, for sure. You're right; it doesn't seem to make sense that a "mechanical" (or electronic) thing would work some of the time but not others. But, that seems to happen with unpredictable regularity.

There's always someone at TS who has the right answer. You can check in, and even post things(!) when you aren't having a "computer moment" too. smile.gif

Goodear, some ISP's avoid using post 25 because it was the traditional email port that carried so much spam. In your ISP instructions for setting up email there should be something about the SMTP daemon rejecting port 25 and giving you an alternative. You have some ISP's blocking port 25 and some that don't http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1784276,00.asp

If you want detail I have an old PDF containing a lot of info. Page 5

port 587 was picked by some large ISP's as an alternitive Over-ride port, other ISP's or Mailservers use other alternative port #'s. If the mail is rejected on one port your offering another choice.

they recommend port 465 but either will do. There are others that I use on different servers. wink.gif

I just got an email from at&t Yahoo a few days ago to change my email setting to the following:

# Open your email client program.
# Locate the email account settings for your particular client.
# Change the POP server to pop.att.yahoo.com.
# Change the SMTP server to smtp.att.yahoo.com.
# Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the SMTP port to 465.
# Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the POP3 port to 995.
# Confirm the above settings then click OK

Must say I have not done it yet.
