I bought a Travel Drive USB 2, 1gig. Is it OK just to plug it into the back of the computer and remove it, or should I take special steps before removing it? Mac G4, system 9.2.

It should show up on your desktop as an external drive, just as a CD or DVD will do.  Eject it, the easiest method is to drag in to the trash.

DO NOT disconnect it without ejecting it first.

It is always best to unmount the drive (drag the drive icon to the trash, or, highlight it and hit Command+E)) before removing it.

OK, but the other day I did pull it our before properly trashing it on screen. What harm could that type of action cause?

It can cause serious directory damage/render data unuseable. I've accidently removed drives out without ejecting them properly a number of times and I've been lucky - nothing bad has happened. But that's not always the case - just ask Parker. He posted a thread on this topic recently.
