U.S. lags behind leaders in Internet speed

I have AT&T Yahoo DSL service rated at 1.5mbps (the fastest available DSL where I live), however, I rarely get over 1.2+mbps.

Cheers, Tom

Forgot to add that you can check your speed here: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

I've got the Virgin Media 10mbs Cable Service. The speed depends on where I'm connecting to. If it's the VM (Blueyonder) News or FTP server I get 10mbs or as nears as matters. Outside of the VM network it varies. That's the internet for you though.  It's only as fast as the slowest link.  I must admit to being VERY satisfied with my Cable Internet service.  I've had it since 1999 when it was 512kbs and have upgraded over the years.  Apart from problems with the email server a few years ago when they decided to use MS Exchange I've had very few problems.  The News Server has been flaky again recently but as most ISP's don't even provide this service I can't grumble too much.

I've got the second tier DSL from AT&T at home.  It seems to keep up pretty well except when I try to do too much with a wireless connection and then it kind of drags.

I got:

Download: 4617 kbps (I guess that's 577.125 kbs, which seems very slow compared to yours)
Upload: 472 kbps (59 kbs)

Disappointing, but everything downloads fast. There's no waiting for youtube or for the Apple movies they post.

2060 kbps download, 620 kbps upload here.

This is wireless, on the G4 iBook, Airport Extreme, Airport Extreme Card in the iBook. 811.g standard.

EDIT: G4 Digital Audio, running a 1.5 Ghz OWC Mercury Extreme processor upgrade, hardwired into the router:

2272 kbps download, 481 kbps upload.

Running ADSLx2 copper wire ADSL.

I'll edit this post with a download speed on the wired desktop G4 shortly.

CK, good point. I'm wireless, using a snow Airport base station that's a few years old.

Verizon told my neighbor that we'll be getting FIOS in a couple of years.

Download 5425 kbps
Upload 545 kbps
Cox Cable

Cox has been fairly reliable and consistent. It occasionally slows during the afternoon, but not seriously.

Checked out speed at several places and from several servers with big differences.

I'm on Optimum Online.

Best from a NYC server:

Download Speed: 13140 kbps (1642.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1851 kbps (231.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Worst from LA server:

Download Speed: 3993 kbps (499.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1829 kbps (228.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

...which of course makes sense since I live near NYC.

ISP is Virgin Media "up to 8mbps" over BT landline - which is the real limiter - Airport from Netgear.....

Best of three tests using Speakeasy was Seattle at 1936 download, Washington upload at 375; using Speedtest.net:: Maidenhead (near London) 1524 download, 379 upload; Napier, New Zealand 1255 download, 332 upload; Seattle 1593 download, 369 upload.

I guess different organisations use slightly different criteria and set-ups for their tests, but it's curious the best results I got on both were through Seattle. All tests run at about 17.20-17.30 UK time.

Try Giganews  As they have a European server you may well get a better measurement of your download speed.

As you are a "Beardy Weirdy" customer you may also have access to the Blueyonder FTP server.  Try downloading a large file from there as that will also give you an idea of your "REAL" download speed.  No ISP can guarantee speeds outside their own part of the network.  That's why peoples results vary so much.

Giganews.europe - 304kbps download (doesn't test upload); so is that 3040mbps?  I'm not too well up on these fancy numbers - I'm still on pounds, shillings and pence blush-anim-cl.gif

It basically means that they are reporting your download speed as 3Meg.  As you are on a BT line your theoretical maximum is 8Meg.  8Meg happens if you are close to the exchange and "at the bottom of the hill".  I checked myself on the BT site . The most I can get on a BT line is theoretically 8meg but in reality it is 6meg. Try the FTP test. I'm Virgin Media (ex Telewest) but on cable and I get the advertised speed as long as I stay within the VM/BY network. Outside of that they can not guarantee speeds.

IIRC the upload speeds on VM/BY are 384 KBS.  This is down to the fact that uploads cost the ISP more than downloads.

Tacit are you there?  I'm sure that you can elaborate
