second drive , cable selet or slave...?
« on: June 29, 2007, 06:32:10 PM »
What to choose for the second internal drive...cable select or slave...?

Both seems to works but i did  a ccc clone on the new drive , trying to reboot  on it  i come back to a os 9 partition of the first drive and can't see the  new drive.

Rebooting to osx on the first , everything's ok, can see all the drives....

Is this because i just initialize and partition whithout reformating, jumper settings...?

Thanks

GR

Not all Macs can use cable select, some have to be master/slave jumpered. And not all IDE cables are the same either. I have a feeling you will have to master/slave jumper your drives in the DA.

QUOTE
Unfortunately, regular 40-conductor IDE/ATA cables don't support cable select. (Why this came about I do not know, but I suspect that some bean counter determined they could save five cents on each PC by doing this.) So to use cable select you need a special cable, and these are of course non-standard, making them a special purchase. Also, many people don't understand cable select, nor do they realize it needs a special cable. If you set both drives to "CS" and then use them on a regular (non-cable-select) IDE cable, both drives will configure themselves as "master", causing a configuration conflict.

Here is some reading regarding cable select and the type of ATA cable needed:

BTW, here's the URL to the DA's setup manual which may be helpful to you.

It's a bit over 3MB.

http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/PowerMacG...lAudioSetup.PDF

Here you go (from the manual):

QUOTE
Your Macintosh can accommodate two internal 1-inch-high ATA devices in the U-shaped drive  carrier in drive position 3 in the computer. If your computer has one Ultra ATA drive, it sits in  the lower portion of this U-shaped drive carrier. You can install a second ATA device in the  upper part of the carrier. The drive that came with your Macintosh is designated the “master drive” (sometimes called  “drive 0”). The ATA drive you add as a second drive is called the “slave drive” or “drive 1.” 1 Configure your drive as a slave drive by setting the appropriate jumpers. Contact your drive  manufacturer or consult the manufacturer’s Web site to determine the correct settings. Note: Your Macintosh doesn’t work with Ultra ATA devices set for cable select mode.

The first is in master mode, the  second drive is in cable select mode and seems to work untill now...

I'm gonna put it in slave mode but as i already have 2 partitions and some data on it is it safe to do that whithout  reformating ...?

Thanks very much Krissel

Changing the jumpers should have no affect on your data. It's only changing the way the hardware can communicate with its parts.

GR,

In any case, I don't believe you can mix Cable-select with Master and Slave settings, you've got to go with one or the other no matter what, whichever works in your machine.

chriskleeman is correct. Never mix Master and Cable Select. If you use Cable Select, all your devices must use Cable Select. If you have your first hard drive set to Master, your second drive should be set to Slave.
