Hi guys,

Is there a keyboard shortcut for minimizing an open window to the Dock? I am running Panther.

Not located in Help, that I can find, but Command-M works

But, now, how to bring it back without having to go to Dock and click Thinking.gif

Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

Just being logical here, but, isn't the reason you'd want to minimize it so that you could see, and presumably work with, another window? That being the case, to get your minimized window to the front again, you'd have to click something anyway. (I don't know how the Dock works, since I'm not an OSX user.)

Hi Gregg,

It might seem counterintuitive, but I don't like to keep the windows open once I've used them. Clicking the Dock is easier than mousing over to the minimizing button in an open window. And minimizing in OS X is not like doing so in OS 9. The window goes down to the dock like a genie into a bottle; there is no minimized "strip" of window left to clutter up your monitor screen. The usefulness of the Dock also depends on what you're doing at the time. I've been job-hunting, and I keep a copy of my cover letter in the Dock, which is a lot like the Windows taskbar. I do have to click on it when I want to open the window and copy/paste it into a new email, but when I'm sending out 25+ resumes a day it saves me many steps being able to close the window with a keyboard command. Also- some people like to use the keyboard more than the mouse, and I'm just one of those people...!

OT a bit: I resisted upgrading to OS X until about a month ago, a move I've never regretted.

Cheers,
Francine

Yeah, I figured it was much like my Windoze task bar.

I'm just saying that a keyboard shortcut to reopen a "minimized" (or docked) window would be a bit difficult, since you could have several "in the dock". So, you'll have to click something... smile.gif

Hi Gregg,

Well, actually, there is a way to do it all with the keyboard.

In OS 9 you could customize the keyboard to launch any app or document with a keystroke. You can still do this in OS X but I haven't done any customizing at this point, as I am brand-new to the OS. You can do this whether or not the app or document is in the Dock.

Since I have put my cover letter in the Dock, I could now conceivably launch it using a keystroke or mouse-clicking the Dock. As Jennie has suggested, I can minimize it using Command + M or I could close it using Command +Q. That gives me a lot of options apart from just using the mouse. Despite having a cute little Kensington optical number, I have never been overly fond of mousing and I don't like mousepads laugh.gif either; never use 'em.

Cheers,
Francine

The Dock is often described as "like the taskbar". As little as I like the Dock, that is far from an accurate description, and absolutely no offense to Francine! smile.gif As with most MS 'features' the Task Bar, AFAIK, has mainly two modes: Hidden or Visible. It's always at the bottom, always the same size, always has most of the same stuff in it, basically text only, etc. Take a look at some of Apple's demos and you'll get a better idea of what the Dock can do and how it can be used, placed, sized, etc. The Dock is like the Task Bar like OS X is like Windows/Vista! laugh.gif Well, they both use the screen! dntknw.gif laugh.gif

On the other hand, you can sometimes get a window back ( possibly without the mouse ) if the program keeps track of its windows and assigns a keyboard shortcut to them ( command-1, command-2, etc. ). I'm trying to remember how to navigate menus with the keyboard. wallbash.gif And that may only work in Finder. Anyway, command-tab will bring up the list of currently running apps, tabbing will scroll through the list, then one can hopefully select the programs "Windows" menu and select the one you want ( even if it's hidden/in the Dock ).

Of course, it's a lot simpler to simply click the windows icon! doh.gif

Francine, it sounds like you could use CopyPaste or Typeit4me or a similar app. Then you could have the text of your cover letter ready to put into an email with only three keys (Command+V+number) or just a few letters of your choosing and the spacebar in Typeit4Me.

I think you're right. Typeit4me sounds like a good bet; I just sent an email to Kagi asking if they will accept a M.O.

I've found <Typinantor> friendly, stable and fast. It also does Auto Corrections nicely. From the PopChar folks at ergonis. smile.gif

One of my old favorites! Like most other applications I have, I used it more in the past than I do now. "cp" does alot more than store things for repetitive tasks. It's a great little program.

Speaking of those keyboard shortcuts we all seem to forget. Here's another solution: <KeyCue from Ergonis>. That's the same place that created PopCharX, Typinator, etc. smile.gif
