Besides, who wants a moose panting all over one's desk??? wink.gif

New iMacs look lovely - but pity about the video cards! http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3023&p=1

I'm sure the they're fine for every day stuff, but they've really left gamers out in the cold, apparently. Not that I really care, but you'd think they'd have given it some thought. huh.gif

Talking about graphics, something that hasn't been mentioned... the Mini does not only has the faster Intel Core Duo 2 but also 64Mb VRam.
Still not to impressing in these times but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I think the wireless mice/keyboards are only options.

While you can probably save more by buying third-party RAM, Apple makes upgrading the 2.4GHz 24 incher to the 2.8GHz, 500BG SATE, 2GB RAM model exactly the same cost as doing it through they Store options. 2.4GHz base model=$1800. Add the 2.8GHz cpu(s), a 500GB drive and another 1GB RAM stick and it costs the same as the regular 2.8GHz model that comes with all those other changes. It's not funny when companies sometimes make the upgrades cost more than what a similarly configured model would cost. Thanks Apple.

Also noticed that all the screens are now 'glossy'. No option for the matte type.

Finally, you might want to wait until after Leopard debuts and then expect it to either be installed or included as an upgrade disk. The current models still only have Tiger installed, of course.

I checked out the photo. It doesn't help me with what I want to know.... I hope the new 20" iMac is not any bigger (taller especially) than the old ones. But, it may not be available when I get around to buying my first new Mac in a decade.

Apple usually is the best place to go for <specifications>. The 20" model is 18.5H x 19.1W. The 24" is bigger(WOW.gif) at 20.5H x 22.4W. smile.gif

Some have suggested that the 'chin' seems to be less tall, it may just be an optical illusion caused by the black around the screen. dntknw.gif

Jonathan Seff's first impressions:

http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/editors/20...sions/index.php

Sounds like your assumption about the "chin" are correct, Jim. Had a good look at pics of the previous iMac and the new one and came to the same conclusion, borne out by Seff's observations.

Thanks, Jim. I can measure my son's "old" 20 inch iMac and see if it is shorter or not, unless there's a web page with that info still out there too...

Hmm... I just found the following note on xlr8yourmac and thought it's worth posting here.
Since they just add notes to the same page I copied the entire text rather then only posting the url (since the text might dissapear to another page in a day or so).

So here's what Dan said about the new display from his new iMac:
QUOTE
Apparently I'm the only one who notices that the new iMac 20in (lowest cost) has a much less capable display than it's predecessor. I just bought two and have them set up here in Milwaukee. The vertical viewing angle is VERY narrow, just like the display on the 17" iMac making the new model very much less acceptable for many graphics applications. Lower cost but... Hopefully the middle 20" and 24" retain the high-quality displays found in the previous models. (My gut feeling is all the 20in models would be using the same panel - but as in the past, they may have more than one source/mfr for the LCD panels and some may be better about this than others.-Mike)

A cynic might opine that Apple saw that it was loosing sales of Mac   Pros to iMac 20in & 24in due to the high qulaity of the previous displays  and now has "corrected" that problem.
 -Dan N.

According to Apple's specs, the pixel dimensions of the 20" models are exactly the same, new vs old. However, they state that the vertical viewing angle for it is ~160° rather than the ~178° for the 24" model. I didn't find the angles in the specs for the older iMacs. But the "glossy" screen may mean that one has a smaller acceptable viewing angle. Certainly LCDs do have smaller angles than CRTs. .dknw

Went to the Apple store today to look at the new IMacs. They are beautiful  however there is too much reflection off of the glass glossy screen. This may not be a problem at home, but in a store or office it sure will be. Also the graphics card leaves much to be desired. Graphics wise they have went backwards. I'm a gamer and if Apple is not going to support me then I'm not going to support Apple. mad.gif mad.gif
