Voice-activated software
« on: August 08, 2007, 08:28:41 PM »
Hullo, my friends & advisors!

My husband asked about voice-activated software. I did a quick search on this forum but did not see what I was looking for. Does anyone have any recommendations for the most easy-to-use, reliable software for this?

Thanks, and hope everyone is doing well,
Lorraine

Hi Larraine, this is really the only VRS available for mac's http://www.macspeech.com/ which i've had since OS 8.6.
It's better than anything on the PC side.

if you need special software for programs you buy additional ScriptPaks

On the PC side I use Dragon Naturally Speaking Mobile Pro. http://www.nuance.com/naturallyspeaking/
Dragon comes with Business Packs that are pretrained to understand Medical or legal language. But if you train macspeech well it catches on pretty good without additional help.

The key to these programs is educating them to the sound of your voice, which is why a good headset is so important. I prefer the stereo headset because it has multiple purposes, they come with a mono headset but you can acquire the option instead.

If you need a Voice recorder use the ones that they recommend I've tried others and they just don't work well.

Have fun! hi.gif

Lorraine,

I had a program by IBM called ViaVoice on my old G3 running OS 8.6. It was very good. However; as Sandbox said you have to train it to recognize your voice and YES a very good headset/mic is very important.

Silly me, I forgot about ViaVoice Dolphin and it's made by the same folks that offer Dragon. I could be wrong here but I don't think they've upgraded it for a while. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12555

Earlier this eve I read over on the Parallel's forum about some people who were using Dragon via the VM machine. They said it was not as fast as native on the PC but quite reasonable in speed. (If you are talking about an Intel Mac, that is.)

Kris, I use Dragon Mobility with Virtual PC MS XP pro on my iBook and it works, slower than macSpeech/iListen of course but it does work. This one is interesting http://www.macspeech.com/product_info.php?...e827743a78ce599 though I wouldn't count on it working as well. It's hard enough to keep out noise interfering with commands on a headset, I can't see it improving at a distance. I do like that you don't need to be tied to a wire though. wink.gif

There seems to be a wide disparity in the prices for this link from Sandbox...
http://www.nuance.com/viavoice/osx/

... and the others shown on this link from Dolphin.

Can you tell me which one we need? My husband does not have any special legal/medical needs for his dictation, but simplicity is necessary.

Lorraine, I think this one would suit his needs just fine:    ViaVoice OS X

Thanks, Roy... Would we need to buy a headset/mic separately, or do you know whether that comes with this set?

Thanks very much. I think we'll go with the Viavoice since it all comes together.

Thanks again, everyone, for your suggestions!

Just to let you know, we bought ViaVoice used on eBay for about $68 including the Andrea headset/mic. It sat for a long time until we finished up some other projects, but we finally installed it today. It works great, and I want to thank everyone again for the advice.

We almost gave up for a while, though, because we kept getting an error message, that our microphone was not connected. After going through all the trouble-shooting docs that came with it, we nearly gave up & thought we should have bought it new. Then I went to the Mac help window right on the computer, which of course led me to System Preferences-> Sound-> Input. I moved the highlight from "Built-in microphone" to "USB" and it worked fine.

It's good to remind ourselves and other newbies to check out the Mac help at the top of our computers, which often provides the answers we need.

But then there's TS!!

Thanks again,
Lorraine
