Should USB card readers get warm?
« on: August 09, 2007, 04:02:55 PM »
One of my card readers gets rather warm, and Im wondering if thats not a good thing.
I leave everything plugged in, so I can just grab the one that I need and not have to bother to plug it in. And I do the same for my camera battery chargers and the phone one and others.
Yet this one particular one is the only one which is warm(not hot, but warm enuf that its noticible).  I wonder if I should unplug them all?  Hope not, but I did take the warm one out.
Thanks,
Jane

If you did that around here, it would get even warmer, assuming by "out" you mean outside! whew.gif

While heat is usually a bad thing for any electronics, I think the change of temps is even worse. Having it a constant temp, especially one that is not hot to your touch, shouldn't be a real problem, IMHO.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system
CAUTION! Childhood vaccinations cause adults!

I wouldn't worry about it unless it gets really hot. It's not unusual for devices to get warm; effective heat dissipation is a constant challenge in the electronics world, especially as things get smaller and smaller but still require/use the same amount of power. UL sets a limit of 105 degrees C for circuit boards. Designers tend to get very nervous if it even approaches that. (And that would be noticeably VERY hot - as in burn your fingers hot) So...just warm, no worries. smile.gif

OK, thats good, since this one is not really hot, just warmer than all the others.
Could take it with me and leave it on the top of the kayak and it would get really hot, then dip it in the water.
So I will plug it back in with all the others and just ignore its warmness.
We love this hot weather, but the electronics and our grand-cat feel the same about the heat, they dont like it much.  But they dont swim!

And then you wouldn't have to worry about it getting hot, since it wouldn't work anymore!! biggrin.gif
