Who knows about iPods?
« on: August 10, 2007, 08:24:14 AM »
I am an iPod iGnoramus.  Haven't got one; don't want one.  BUT I do want to get one for my daughter who has a Dell laptop.
Since Apple have sold far more Pods than there are Mac users, I assume there is no problem using the thing with a PC, but want to be assured.

Also would like views of eXperienced iPod uSers on the most appropriate model.   Just please don't advise me to wait for the iPhone.  Despite Dick's euphoria, as far as I'm concerned it's a no-no.  toothgrin.gif

Yes there is a version of iTunes for PCs.... not sure of the system / OS requirements... newer is always better (??)

As far as what type to get.... what may she use it for other than music???  if for photos,etc... the 5G (5th Generation) ipod w/30 GB will hold plenty of music and photos w/room to spare... (That is the one I have).

If it's just music she's after.... probably an iPod Nano of some flavor would be sufficient..

Peter,

This iPod Comparison Matrix may help.

Alas, the prices are in USD, but the performance detail and other comments may assist.

As a non-owner/user, another consideration is where/how she will use the iPod. I'm not sure the video and higher capacity models are suitable for joggers. A flash memory model might be better in that 'rugged' atmosphere? dntknw.gif

Thanks Jim for your thoughtful addition.  I don't think she's into jogging — more of a Yoga type, but I'll bear your caveat in mind when I speak to the gurus at Apple.    I've already acknowledged the wise words from Harv & Bob via iChat & eMail, but couldn't let yours go without a thank you.   Cheers.

Yes, its done.  Our kids have iPods and PC machines.  I have not a clue of how they do it though, as I dont have a PC anymore(gave it to our local school).

Just the same as on the Mac, Jane. iTunes for Windows. smile.gif

From most reports, the iPod video is fine when jogging - no skips etc. like we all remember from the days of Sony Walkmans. Those who posit that "it's not good for it" etc., generally don't actually seem to own one! However, if sheer portability is an issue, then the Nano is the way to go. We had a 40GB 4th generation iPod which held our entire music collection of some 8400 songs with about 15GB of room left over, but it has recently begun exhibiting signs of imminent death (hard drive skipping, refusing to play at all etc.) and we're awaiting a new 30GB iPod video courtesy of the EasySwitch program at the TDCanada Trust bank. (Switch from another bank and fulfill a couple of other conditions and they give you an iPod!) My 15-year-old son prefers his Nano, but he changes his music around all the time. We just keep adding to ours, so it's nice to have it all in one place. We also like taking it with us to friends or house rentals, or in the car. No dithering about which CDs to take - it's all there.

So...might also want to find out how big your daughter's CD collection is, Bellbram and whether she'd actually want to have her entire collection on the iPod or not. (We have 600-700, plus downloads from iTunes store etc.)

Thanks Jane & Paddy.   I'll find out the size of her CD collection, tho' I don't think it's vast.  Being of a different generation, I find it hard to credit that some folk number their collection of music in thousands.   Extraordinary.
