something new to smoke
« on: September 25, 2007, 03:12:14 PM »
Downwind was a roofing crew smoking some tar. Upwind was a nest of bees that didn't care for the aroma.
While this appears to be a lot of bees most were still in the air. Thousands poured out of that nest and darkened the sky around this Live Oak in my back yard.

At least it was bees and not yellow jackets. That's what had nested at the base of our one tree -- and our landscaper uncovered them. Didn't know he could run that fast! We had to have our bug guy come exterminate them.

Glad you weren't stung.

I wonder whether those were Africanized bee's?  I know they're in Texas and Florida and in areas in between!  I found a map with their range and have attached it. I didn't realize that they were already in Oklahoma!  They're inbreeding with regular bee's but they're still pretty aggressive.

Later: I just smoked out my motel room.  Couldn't sleep and thought that it was too cold in the room so I tried to adjust the air conditioner/heater so it wasn't blowing so cold and ended up blowing stinky "smoke" into the room which set off the smoke alarm.  My kids, who could sleep, were "extremely" hacked off at me!   rolleyes.gif

Wow Diger, didn't I ever get that turned around?  notworthy.gif
Any-who, the bees, in an effort to return to the nest were attached to each other outside of it. As the wind blew you could see the whole sheet of them wave in the air, it looked like a doily.

Gunug, I was taking to someone yesterday about this and he told me the the local Bugman is ordered to kill all the nest he removes. They can no longer move them to a beekeeper. I thought with the bee shortage, that they would try to preserve as many as they could, but evidently the threat of Africanized bees is greater.

Well, at least they stuck to a natural environment...

The wasp that stung me this summer came from a hive built in the hollowed out front of the trash bin, intended as a handle. I pulled, they pounced!

That was definitely not two bees! (you know, "2 bees, or not 2 bees... that is the question")
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Gregg, it's been sometime since I've been stung, I used to get stung regularly when riding my Harley wearing a leather. They would fly up the sleeves and get you good. wink.gif

A friend, who grew a large nose because air is free had an Africanized Bee fly up his nosehole at 60mph. When the bee was finished the dude looked like the Hulk.
