Some week ago I bought the latest Apple wired slim keyboard.  What I particularly like about it are its matt white keys (no glare from the halogens above) and the quiet thump on key depression.  But I have a BUT.  I find that unless I type ultra carefully and press really firmly on the space bar, I finish up withsomethingthat lookslike this.

I've considered putting it in the cupboard and getting Logitech's wired wavy board, but would like to hear from anyone who has one.  Is it any good and are those black keys shiny?
My old Apple board had shiny black keys and I found the glare very off-putting.

Or maybe there's an alternative out there with matt white keys.

Or a tutor who can get me accurately to touch type.

Hmmm...interesting. I've been considering one of the new wired keyboards - my 2 year old one that came with the G5 has a few sticky keys and I don't like it's crumb-catching/cat hair snaring/fuzzball collecting ways. There are almost 400 reviews of the new keyboard at Apple and most people like its feel; it gets an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Of the complaints there are, one is that it doesn't work with KVM switches, and the other, from a few users, is the same as yours. Makes me wonder if there are some keyboards out there that aren't quite up to standard? A couple of other posters cautioned that it can take a while to get used to, but once you do, it's great. However, they didn't say you need to pound on it. However, I've learned that keyboards, like mice, are very personal things, so what suits one person may be unbearable to another (ie: don't ever stick me with a trackball!).

For those who loved the old Mac extended keyboard feel, these are supposed to be amazing, but yikes - they're also amazingly expensive:

The Logitech Wireless Wave gets a good review at CNET.

There are a lot of reviews here: http://reviews.digitaltrends.com/reviews_s...score_DESC.html of various keyboards. The Logitech wireless ones generally score well - though I think they come in pretty much identical wired versions for the most part.

Here's hoping someone here actually HAS one. smile.gif (I don't suppose there are any big box type stores with big keyboard displays where you can actually try them on the Isle of Man. sad.gif )

I have used a Macally iceKEY keyboard for a couple of years.  I like it because it has the feel of a high-quality portable Mac keyboard.  There is less of "key travel" compared to standard Apple keyboards. It is also virtually silent when typing. The keys are matte while the surrounding plastic is white gloss; I have never noticed a glare problem associated with using the keyboard. I think that it is also available in black.

Here is a review of the iceKEY.

I like the look of the iceKey, but at $150, I think it's a but much.

I'd really like to hear from anyone who has used the Logitech wavy wired.

Else I'm going to have to plod on withmyfunnyspacebar.

I paid around $40 US for it two years ago; is it really the equivalent of $150 US in the U.K.?  There isn't a keyboard on the planet for which I would pay $150!

Eek - still the equivalent of $93 USD at today's exchange rates. Amazon.com has it for $39.99 with free shipping. You guys in the UK are really getting soaked! sad.gif

Therein lies the mystery. And why do we continue to have to pay 40% MORE for books in Canada? Or thousands more for cars? Our dollar is now worth more than the US dollar, and while this is a recent phenomenon, it's been climbing steadily for several years now and there is absolutely NO reason that books should still show this ridiculous disparity in cost. There has been a lot of complaining about this in the press and online lately. A friend of mine who is a wholesale car dealer said that it almost stopped his sales dead last month as there was article after article in the paper about how much cheaper cars were in the US. This is more true for the high end than the low end, but silly people believed it and then found out that it's a lot of work to import a car from the US, and gee... it actually costs some money and maybe it's not such a good deal after all, and so then they just sat there, not buying anything at all. Things have picked up again now, but it was quite weird for a bit.

Apple, to their credit, have adjusted their prices as the Canadian dollar has climbed - at least on all newer product, anyway. Other manufacturers like Dell have also done so.

But there are other companies that continue to try to milk Canadians for all they're worth, offering really lame excuses for the disparity in pricing.

I don't know why things in Europe and the UK are so much more generally - there are higher sales taxes, real estate is generally more expensive (and rents as well, I'd guess) and labor costs may be higher and there may be really high duties on imported items, but does that result in twice as much for a computer keyboard?

I erred in suggesting the iceKey was $150.  That was the price for the Matias Tactile board mentioned in Paddy's first post.   Nevertheless, I fear we do get taken for a ride in the UK especially with U.S. imports.

Thanks to pbeans for pointing me in the direction of a UK site for the iceKey.  Their price (inc delivery) is £45 — a little over US$90 — still a lot more than you guys across the pond have to fork out.

I shall have a think about it  Thinking.gif

Thanks to all of you for the input.

While starting to drift a little from the original question.....

Re: the Matias Tactile Pro.  As far as I am concerned, there is no better keyboard.  Of course, I was able to get my version 1 for $99 on sale.  However, be advised that there is a big flaw (design flaw, that is) in the v2  keyboard.  The newest Tactile Pro was designed to have  USB 2  so you could connect various USB 2 devices to the keyboard .... to free up a port on your computer.  Unfortunately, they changed the way the keyboard itself connects to your computer.  The first version (which had usb 1.1 ports) had the keyboard cable (which is hardwired) coming from the back of the keyboard.  USB 1.1 ports were located on the left and right corners of the keyboard.  Like most people, I assume, I connect my mouse (actually a trackball) to one of these ports, leaving the other to temporarily connect whatever USB device I may need to connect.  The new version 2 design places the connection cable on the left corner of the keyboard .... essentially giving the device only 1 USB port to which a device can be connected.  Well, if you normally connect your mouse via the keyboard .... you are left with no USB port available on the keyboard.  I wrote Matias quite some time ago about this and it was confirmed.  They advised me to wait for the next iteration ... version 3, which will again place 2 USB ports (both USB 2) on the keyboard.  Anyway, it is still an expensive KB ..... but  ..... it is very solid, reliable, and .... if you loved the old Apple Extended and its Alps key switches, you will love the Tactile Pro.

Thanks zampom. I still use my Apple Extended with a USB adapter. At least I know there is something I can get for a replacement when the time comes.

Peter: Stay away from Logitech. Even their latest software LCC 2.3.1 is bad news. You can use USB overdrive or steermouse for their mice but they dont work with keyboards, so your stuck using Logitech software. By the way it sounds like you have a bad keyboard, I have one of the new ones and I don't have any problem with the space bar.

Thanks for the tip Dick.  I have decided NOT to get a Logitech board, though I have a Logitech Laser mouse which I am very happy with.  I may go for a Macally iceKey.

As for my funny space bar on the new Apple board, I can't really be sure whether it's the keyboard at fault or my typing technique.  It could just be that I can't get used to what seems to be a flatter profile.
Don't really know.  Maybe if I typed a mite slower it would help.  But I'm an impatient typist — and just an impatient type I guess  rolleyes.gif
