Jane, can't you just drag down that list to an existing folder (or create one first) in those below the separator and choose one of those to save the screenshot?  I don't have that option in Panther but somehow it 'knows' to save to a folder I made on the desktop for screenshots. I've been searching all over to find out how it knows.

Still no luck, on either of my Macs, Panther nor Tiger.  So I will start looking at their forum. Ive got version 2.1.1 on both and there is an upgrade to 2.2.1 available.
So when we get home, I sure will look into that.
Today will be extra busy, as we get our puppy.

Can you tell me how you set your computer so that screenshots land on your desktop? Also, how do you "save as" with a screenshot? I can't do it - there is no "save as" option when I open the document. Remember, I have system 9.2. Thanks!

According to the Apple doc, the screenshot is supposed to be saved to the main drive. But there are many places where they say it is saved to the desktop in OS 9 by default. Thing is, most of us here are no longer using 9 so we don't remember what was available.

I do remember my screenshots being saved to the desktop in OS 9 but I don't remember if I did anything special to get it to do that.

Your screenshot is saved as a PICT, yes?  You could open it in AppleWorks and save it as a jpg if I recall.
Or of course in any graphics application like PhotoShop or Graphic Converter.

I remember screenshots being saved to the main drive ("Mac HD") in 9, and there being no options to save them elsewhere. My drive was clean enough that I could click on it, instantly see the pic icon, move it, and rename it.

I don't know why, but as I reread this thread, my memory of OS9 was that they were saved in the docs folder.

Yes its in the HD. I move it to the desktop and open it up. There is no option to "Save as." I can make it a PDF.

As I recall, I used to open the picts in Photoshop and resave them as tiffs. What program are you opening them in?

Tinkertool 3.8 now has a preference setting for setting default folder for screenshots:
