Adobe Reader 8.1.0 PDF Viewer Plugin/Safari 2.0.4 Conflict
« on: October 16, 2007, 02:07:42 PM »
"Upgraded" to Adobe 8.1.0 after the arrival of my new iMac.  Now when I attempt to save or print PDFs from within Safari the browser locks up tight and I must force-quit Safari...

This problem has been reported with beta versions of Safari 3 and removing the "AdobePDFViewer.plugin" fixes the problem. (Some people allude to reverting to Safari 2 to regain previous print/save functions but I am already using Safari 2!)  Now I cannot print or save Web-based PDF files; I can only save and print via Safari. And For The Life Of Me I cannot find a way to designate Preview or Adobe Reader 8 to handle PDF files that I link to using Safari.

FWIW, it is my impression that this has something to do with the 10.4.10 update instead of being Safari's "fault."

At any rate, any ideas out there? I can access the PDFs using Firefox because it asked me to designate an application when I just started it up. But Safari is my usual Web browser. It is odd that I cannot locate a preference setting in either browser that allows me to change how PDFs are handled...

As desperate guess, maybe TinkerTool or other such utility will help.

It has something called: "Disable native support for display of PDF documents". I am not at all certain what that means, though I suppose it is easily undone if it does not help.

Perhaps the following thumbnail will help (I hope)-

Sorry for the tepid response.

Am using Panther so I'm behind in the Safari versions.

But would it help to control+click on the pdf file and choose to download it? Then you can open it in Preview or Acrobat or Reader and print.  That's what I usually do and then I have a copy of the file for future use.

OK, I didn't know about that... I control-clicked the open PDF file in Safari and it opened in Adobe Reader, where I could print or save it.  Right after I did so Adobe Reader crashed and burned...

Me thinks that Adobe Reader may have some "issues."  It wouldn't be the first time, if memory serves me.

If Reader 7 is working for you then I would suggest that folks forgo "upgrading" to Reader 8. But sometimes that isn't possible because some needed documents are not compatible with older versions of Reader.  That's what got me into trouble...

Hi Mayo,

I don't use Safari much, but I can tell you that Reader 8.1 has been a pain in the rear end with Mozilla SeaMonkey. No matter what I do, or how many times I reset the helper application preferences, the program will not accept the  change in the preferences panel. Now this is in Tiger, 10.4.10. So when I try to open an attached .pdf, SeaMonkey can't find the helper application.

Now either Jennie or Paddy posted a link for a program called PDF Browser Plugin, and that has been the only way that SeaMonkey will recognize Reader 8.1

I'm going to much around in the TS site and see if I can find it, or I can e-mail it to you if I can't find the post. I'll put in a new reply in this thread if I find the link.

HTH,

Chris K

EDIT: Mayo, this is unfortunately a plug-in only for Mozilla products, posted by XABD...
