PC Magazine columnist says "Leopard is the new Vista!"
« on: November 30, 2007, 08:47:09 AM »
QUOTE
I'm not sure what ticks me off more about Leoptard (I can't take credit for that nickname—some Brit coined it): the fact that so many of the semi-important changes don't work, the fact that Apple turned a stable OS into a crash-happy glitz fest, or that the annoying, scruffy Live Free or Die Hard actor infecting my TV (and our Web site, by the way) is pretending that Leopard is better than Vista. It's not better than Vista. Leopard is Vista. And Tiger is better than both of them!

I had to be talked, wined, dined, and peer-pressured into buying my first MacBook Pro this past January. But once I plunked down the bucks for the slightly less hardware oomph per dollar than I'm used to, I was impressed by one thing: Everything. Just. Worked. Period.

Tiger just works. End of story.

But Apple marketing has the swinging pair of crabapples to actually print "Leopard Just Works" on its Web site. Hey, at least Microsoft reps have the decency to look a little abashed when you point out their product's screwups. Apple reps just glare at you like they're daring you to say something. Well, I've got something to say. Several somethings.

He goes on to tell what he "really" thinks!  Anyone else feel the same way?  I really haven't had the time with Leopard to have any problems but I probably will!

Later: Be sure to see his Video "rant" about this!  Also I liked and agree with the following:

QUOTE
Who's responsible for Apple's redesigned dock? I could understand a programmer thinking a mirrored dock would look great on his résumé. But I can't imagine that a UI expert looked at it and said it was more functional than Tiger's. A stupid cornflower-blue fuzzball is no replacement for Tiger's clear, dark arrow that let me know what apps I had open. I could actually see the arrow. The blue fuzzy thing just blends in with the pointless mirrored reflections of the app icons, so now I've got to squint for the same information.

I could not disagree with him more. I am running both Leopard and Vista and believe me there is no comparison. I have had no problems with Leopard, however Vista is a pain in the butt. Vista has no regard for the user, for example last week I was playing a game in Vista when suddenly the game just quit, I thought it had crashed, but no it was just Vista wanting to do an upgrade. This has happened before, it just takes over your computer. I know Leopard is not perfect but to compare it with Vista is crazy.

I don't know where that guy is coming from. My experience with Leopard is positive except for the speed. With Tiger my computers both had minor problems with applications quitting unexpectedly. I haven't seen that with Leopard.

The speed issue is no more than an annoyance. It just makes me want to go out and get a newer computer. tongue.gif

Hmmm

I (reluctantly) re-upgraded to Leopard and must confess I've had several forced reboots. Something I never had with Tiger. I'm seriously thinking about stumping up for Parallels or VMWare Fusion and going back (yet again) to Tiger. Tiger was/is IMHO more stable and easier on the eye.

I also was not keen on the new firewall.  Fair enough there is Waterroof, which lets you use ipfw, but surely it was not beyond Apple's ability to include a Frontend for both firewalls.

Battery life does not seem as good on my Macbook either.  This is something that has been commented upon quite widely on the 'Net

Aaaarghh

I should not have posted...

Half an hour or so after I did, I got yet another forced shutdown.  All I was doing was browsing, as well as running Xchat Aqua and Adium. That was one restart too many.

This time it's back to Tiger until Apple sort everything out.

Instead of buying Candybar 3, I'll try out Parallels and VMWare and then decide which one to buy.  Bootcamp was nice but Leopard in the end made it not worthwhile

After all the 'hullabalew' over Leopard, I'm pleasantly surprised at how nice it is. The keyboard still needs improvements (it still maekz speling mistaks!). But the OS has proven stable, at least for the first 23 hours! tongue.gif

Still looking for app conflicts, most seem to be related to PPC vs Intel, however.

Right now, the only problem seems to be with iChat. I was able to video chat with Dick Miller with him initiating the connection. But not since then with any Nevermind. It seems that I had the Firewall set a little too restrictively, I had set it to allow only 'essential' services and that did not include video iCaht, apparently.

Wasn't there another thread here wherein we learned that doing an "archive and install" was the way to avoid such problems?

I did an upgrade installation on my PowerBook and a clean installation on my desktop.

My biggest complaint is Leopard related and it has to do with the Wireless Mighty Mouse. For some reason, mouse operation just stops. I have found that all I have to do is switch the mouse off, let the Bluetooth software recognize the disconnect, then turn the mouse back on and restart Bluetooth.

Sandy, you'll be back once that Leopard changes its spots. Maybe 10.5.5??? wink.gif

Gregg

Once they have sorted out all the problems, niggles and inconsistencies I will certainly use Leopard. Or maybe I'll just wait for Sabretooth.  That should have really snappy performance

What about yourself?  When are you going to join us in the 2000's?  wink.gif
