Details of Leopard

First, since I didn't actually get to install Leopard, I can't comment on speed differences. But I can state that a Shutdown or Restart is faster! Mainly because you now have only 60 seconds to cancel that request instead of 2 minutes in Panther/Tiger! smile.gif

Have noted another change in the Finder's Edit menu, the "Compress" item has replaced "Archive." I suppose that is less confusing to noobies? dntknw.gif

And, contrary to what I thought I had read, there is still a "Page Setup..." item in most app's File menu. The changes in how one accesses printers has been noted elsewhere.

Are there minor changes like the above that may have surprised you or that make things easier to understand or more helpful? Thinking.gif Enquiring and tediously searching minds want to know! tongue.gif

Open a Finder window. Switch to column view if for some unknown and certainly useless reason you are not using that setting! tongue.gif Make the window wide enough to have at least two blank columns. Right(control)-click in one of the empty columns. Select "Get Info". What happens?

If the Finder crashes and restarts, you've got a 'normal' Leopard install! clap.gif

It's a method Apple inserted to see how many 'idiots' are trying to get "info" on nothing! smile.gif OTOH, maybe Apple just inserted this behavior to show how stable the OS is; "Even if an Application crashes, the System does not!"

Or maybe we need to add Finder to the list of apps not yet compatible with Leopard! laugh.gif

New Use for Space Bar Revealed!

Open a finder window. Select something. Press the space bar. Wah lah! There it s! Press the space bar again. Back to normal...not sure what this is good for except getting a better preview of a text/image document without actually opening it. Nice!

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

How many of you use "Stacks" in Leopard? (How many of you use "Stacks" but not in Leopard?)

How many of you have it set up as a "Fan?" How many as a "Grid?"

How many use the left or right side positioning of the Dock? How many who do can change the choice of "Fan" or "Grid?" I don't see the "View As..." choice with the Dock on the left or right side. Thinking.gif

"Quick Look" in Leopard is even better than "Show as Slideshow" in Tiger, IMHO. There is no "Show as Slideshow" in the Finder's File menu, anyway. But "Quick Look" can be accessed with a single key press - the space bar! The old 'command-y' still works but the space bar is easier to tap. Plus, you can quickly set up the slide show to cover the entire screen or just the default size (mainly, show as big as required to fill the height of the screen). Really makes selecting a single image out of a bunch much easier.

Of course, it's not limited to images. "Quick Look" can display an entire PDF and much of the contents of many file types. All without opening anything more than a Finder window. Nice! clap.gif

I'm, not much of a screen saver watcher, but has anyone tried selecting "Mosaic?" Strange way to watch all your iPhoto images but not a bad demo for a Windows user. wink.gif

While I still don't care for the Dock, here's a <Macworld Printing Tip> that will also (I hope) delete the printer icon from the command-tab listing. I suppose it's Apple's way of implementing a Desktop Printer via the Dock. dntknw.gif But it seems to be something that bugs a lot of people. smile.gif

There's also some info on how to access hidden, advanced printer set up features, mainly for non-standard printers.

And, no, the 'flybynight' commenter is not me...wallbash.gif
