Quark Express Experts?
« on: February 13, 2003, 02:25:00 PM »
I've been given a MAC ZIP disk with a file folder on it; the folder includes a number of font files and a file that supposed to be for a version of Quark for the MAC.  I ran a utility on (something called Cross Platform Report) which told me this file as of a type called Xpress 3 Layout which seems consistent with reality (this is always nice).

I have installed a brand old copy of QuarkExpress Passport Version 3.32 (never opened complete with dongle) and it appears to run properly; but I cannot open this file.  All I get is a snotty screen saying something like:

This document can't be opened by this
   version of QuarkXPress Passport. [17]

If an XPress version 3 Layout page can't be opened by a QuarkExpress Passport version 3.32 then what can I do?  I've looked on Quark's website and even downloaded something that was supposed to be an upgrade but it didn't work either!

Hmmm... that's strange. Maybe it is a newer version that's been saving in an "older format" but didn't succeed well. Is the file big? I could try to open it in my version of QuarkXPress PassPort (that's a version for multi lingual documents, which could also have been the case).

It's a very small file (324K); but is a Xpress 3 Layout file something that could be opened with that version of QuarkExpress?  Is there some problem with using that version of software on OS 9.2?  I'd like to check the Quark website but they're down for maintainance.

Other ideas I had:

1) Is there some way of "locking" a file so it can only be opened on a given system?

2) Is there something strange about my copy of the program (it does come up saying it's for educational use)?

3) While the fonts appear to be pretty much run of the mill do they need to be saved into the system folder or someplace else?

Thanks!

Dependent on if the file was created in a version newer than 3.32 (such as 3.32r2 or whatever - haven't looked at that version in some time).

Hope that helps.

The updaters are downloadable for 3.32 from Quark (at least they used to be).

Take care.

The Quark website has been down since yesterday.  I downloaded that update and it doesn't like my program (I probably have Revision 1).  I also tried to download the version 5 demo but their site was unstable and kept crashing.

As a test I've created and saved a simple document with the system I have and when I saved it as a document CROSS PLATFORM tells me it's an XPRESS 3 Layout file and when I save it as a template it tells me its a XPRESS 3 Template file.  Maybe I need the Revision 2 or 5 update to see this thing.

Cyberpet (Petra?). . .can I email that thing to you to see if you can open it?  I will have to ask our personnel department (it's their document) but I think it's just a file with a manual in it (hardly secret stuff).

No problems sending me the file if the customer/department gives their OK. I'll see if I can open it and perhaps also try to convert it to a format you can open. If not I do have some other tricks up my sleve too that we can take privately.

A stupid thought probably but...
It seems you are asking this for professional matters (for work or so?) so can't you try to open the file in InDesign (version 2 if possible).
I don't really have an answer on the problems, but i know Quark isn't really THAT platform compatible, pc files do give problems on Mac... not to mention the other way around

About the ZIP drive, i think the person made a "collect to publisher" using that function on Quark, or the "PreFlight" software (damn, i have a feeling this is called different.. that software).

Hope you solve it at any way

Quark 4 uses the same Quark Type and Creator codes as Quark 3. However, a Quark 4 file can not be opened in Quark 3.

I'd say you have a Quark 4 file, not a Quark 3 file. Your report program erroneously believes it is a Quark 3 file because it has the same Type and Creator codes as a Quark 3 file.

I've recieved the file, open it no problems in XPress PassPort 4.11. I have tried to save it as a 3.3 document and send it back. I hope it works!
