DiskWarriopr facts you might need for Intel-based machines

I was trying to use DW 40 to repair my main drive. Got an error each time I tried to run RW on my main OS (10.4.10). Thanks to the excellent, no superb tech support form Alsoft, I found the following:

1) Booted the backup drive (10.4.10) a (via SuperDuper!) of the main drive. DW did not boot because the clone OS still accessed parts of the old drive. This is especially a problem with 10.4 and 10.5

2) Tried to boot from the DW disk. Was able to choose the DW OS but booting into DW OS failed. This was a problem with DW 40. You need to get revision 41. Cost is $20.50.

3) Ran DW with my main OS booted and used DW to service the backup OS. Worked! Passed both criteria 1) and 2) above.

Those must be gold plated disks! That must include overnight delivery, I guess.

According to Alsoft, version 41 will work with Leopard.

ABD, I didn't understand your comment. The upgrade disk is complete with an appropriate OS on it (10.4.x, 10.5, I believe)

Thanks, MamaMoose. I need to order the upgrade so I have it for my machine.

My two-cents: I think DiskWarrior is worth every penny of Sneakers money that I spend on it. tongue.gif

Interesting MM..... I do this all the time as general maintenance and so far have not had a problem rebuilding the directory from a cloned (superduper) partition.  Infact, I do it from two partitions.  Both are separate USB 2 HDs.  The 1st drive is always on to access extra disk space and has a partition specified for backing up my main partition.  The second is strictly a backup drive that is manually shared amongst all my Macs.

But, what I am getting at is that both back ups boot and run DW to rebuild the main drive directory without any error.

Hmmm..... Don't know what more to say.

My comments concerned the cost of the 'upgrade.' If this was merely fixing a problem with the program, I think they are charging way to much, I doubt they pay more than a dollar per disk. OTOH, if this is the true upgrade to Leopard compatibility, the charge may not be as bad. However, I've not been out a nickel due to upgrading to Leopard except for Elements and that includes an upgrade from version 3 to 6, not a minor software upgrade, IMHO. Since I don't own DW, my cost is nill, and my opinions are irrelevant, but I will keep this in mind if I decide to purchase it. wink.gif

Al,

My bad! I should have made it clear that what I said applies to Intel-based Macs. As far as I can tell, you have PPCs.

Jim,

I think the cost is due to the fact thaey have OS 10.5 on the DW disk. I'll bet that Apple charges them at least $10 for ech disk delivered to a user.

No MM, this is done on my Intel iMac... My MDD G4 is also done the same way.  What it allows is an emergency bootable partition that is always available unless the hard drive fails.

Interesting thing is that I didn't install DW on each backup.  It was cloned by SuperDuper and still works to rebuild the main partition.

I wonder.... Is your back up partition called the same thing as your main partition?  Just for reference, mine aren't.  One follows the partition name with "back up".  It is named that way before I make the clone. dntknw.gif
