I haven't been to another country besides Canada since I was 17, and wasn't so observant then. So, here's my question:
Do people who drive on the "other" side of the road also walk on the corresponding side of a sidewalk or corridor?

I've wondered about that from time to time. Around here, we do. If you stray over to the "wrong" side, you're going against the "traffic" flow. (Of course, in Canada, I can drive on the "correct" side of the road without giving it a second thought.)

Can't speak for others, but I believe people have become quite selfish over here. The majority - at least in bigger towns - seem to just walk where they want and expect you to get out of their way. In fact I sometimes wonder if I'm invisible... sad.gif

OK - I had a bit of a rant there..... oops.gif

However, it's still officially the same as the rule of the road - keep left; on the railways the rule is the same, but on the rivers and canals boats keep right. I have no idea why it's different, though.

Where's the "steering wheel" of a small boat? It could be a function of where the boats are made I suppose.

 biggrin.gif - all the main lines are at least double-track, and in some places four tracks, two for expresses and two for 'local stopping' trains. Only the smallest branch lines are single-track.

I'm not sure what happens with Eurostar, which links London with Paris and Brussels via the Channel tunne, but would guess it keeps to the right since (I'm fairly sure) it has dedicated tracks in England. Marcel (MriousB) has used that, so he might be able to enlighten us smile.gif

I was taught that when walking I should walk on the side of the road so that I'm facing oncoming traffic; and my folks taught me that this was a good rule whether there was a sidewalk or not. It's safer. You'll see the car coming before it hits you and you can scream really loud that way. wink.gif

The driver is a she.

The worst place to be a pedestrian is in a downtown area. Drivers pull up to a red light or stop sign and look to the left (I'm in the U.S.) for the oncoming cars, then begin their right turn without looking to the sidewalk to check for pedestrians. I don't have a horn to blow, so I yell at them to get their attention.

I THINK the last couple of posts have been tongue-in-cheek. At least I hope so smile.gif

In my experience there are two types of driver - the good and the bad. So that's me and everybody else! biggrin.gif (Oh, and that IS tongue-in-cheek)

Hey Highmac,
I'm really glad you mentioned this cause I also feel that it's painly irritating to walk around on more busy areas in London.
We learned fast to ignore those but even on sidewalks, stores or where ever that have more people, it just seems that you have to bump into people before they notice.
Smiley had a person plainly ignoring her and walk past her to the fitting room, man that pissed me off.
A good thing the stewardess standing there did told that girl that Smiley was first.
The girl mumbled something like "ooh... I didn't really saw and... I..." so I finished it for her by adding "decided just to ignore you".
People like that really piss me off, so ignorant and always having there nose or ear stuck up to their mobile phones.

Now I am having a rant whistling.gif
