Transferring Files
« on: January 26, 2008, 12:08:45 PM »
A friend of my wife's has a PowerBook G3 and an iMac dome which her son gave her.

The PB has no diskette, only a CD. I assume it is read only.
The iMac has a CD drive.
And, of curse, no firewire port on the PB.

Both have Ethernet ports.

She has been using the PB for most of her doc preps (Word for Classic). She has many docs.
She has hardly used the iMac at all. (But it is much faster and has OS X). That's a long story.
Older lady, and doesn't welcome change very readily.

She has Microsoft:Office X installed on the iMac.

Now how to get the Word docs xferred over to the iMac. The PB is way too slow for her. (Probably limited on memory and OS 9.2.2).

Can I connect an Enet cable between the computers and set up the PB for file sharing?
Does it have to be cross-over Enet cable?
Do the files have to be in a folder on Macintosh HD?
Or will the iMac show the complete desktop of the PB?

I also have an Asante Ethernet Hub.
If all else fails, I could take over 2 Enet cables and use the Hub.

The only problem with that is, if she continues to use the PB (for convenience), she will not have the Hub there to xfer any new files over to the iMac.

No, she can't have my Enet Hub!

- Thanks, Jack

Does the PowerBook & iMac have USB? You could use a USB flash drive to transfer the files.

Tom has a good idea there, if it's possible on both computers.

Yes, you can set up file sharing between OS9 and OSX. I did it awhile back, but had phone support, which I needed, due to using a new iBook. I did use a cross-over "Enet" cable. Whether or not that's required, I'm not sure. There is an article or two on the Apple Support web site that purports to explain how to set this up. I found my hard copies. Don't have them bookmarked, but here are the links that appear on the copies:

OS9
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106657

OSX
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106461

The "host" computer will show the entire file structure of the "guest" (my terms). At least that's the way I remember it. This was a few years ago.

If your friend continues to use the PB, it will be a pain to keep doing the file sharing. Good luck!

A 'standard' cable should work as the "dome" model can take care of the usual problems older models had with that. Even the 10Base Ethernet will be easier and faster than USB which the PB probably doesn't have, anyway. dntknw.gif

No USB on the PowerBook.

Thanks, ABD, I will give the direct cable connect a shot before I try the Hub route.

Hopefully will test this out next week. I'll post afterwards.

Thanks for the links, Gregg.

They look very helpful.

You may need a crossover cable.

Is this the original G3 PB, the Kanga?
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powe...ook_g3_1st.html

If it is a Wallstreet there are PC card USB and FW ports that work fine. I have both for my Wallstreet and can use USB thumb drives as well as external FW drives. The Kanga also has Type II slots so it should be able to use the PC cards also.

One other thing to consider if the ethernet doesn't pan out is to have her stuff the docs into some zip formatted files and email them to the other machine.

Speaking of kelly — I miss his posts! Tons of information in them.

krissel,

I don't know which PB it is.

But I do remember something on the left side toward the rear which may be a PCMCIA ? slot. I'll have to take my card over with an SD card. This would make it easy for me to do a one-time xfer, but wouldn't help her later. I also have an Edge USB Hub with card slots so I could read the card on the iMac.

I will have to check next time I go over there, hopefully this week — probably later in the week.

Thanks all, Jack

Could it possibly be a Pismo . . . with a gentle curve  to the case?

The PCMCIA slot is on the left toward the rear.  At one point I had a Compact Flash adapter from a card reader which just slipped into the cardbus slot and would read the Flash cards. Now I have a USB card and a FW card that sit on top of each other in the dual slot to which I can connect external drives, hubs and thumbdrives. The Wallstreet also has ADB, SCSI and serial ports as well as floppy and zip drives that go into an expansion bay. The only thing my PB can't read is DVD.  All else is possible. smile.gif

If it's either a Wall Street or a Pismo, Jack, 'twill approach being a no-brainer.

Dick,

I think the PB is a Wallstreet. It has no firewire or USB. The Pismo has USB.

I'll do some checking when I go back over later this week.

I gave my Pismo G3 powerbook to Kelly, as I had not used it for several years, the battery was dead, and I had bought another one.  So I sent everything on to him.
Kelly ressurected it and then sent me all my pictures from it on a CD.  Not sure how it was done, but the result was perfect. The little lovely hardly used machine found a good home and my pictures, he sent right along.  This one had USB.
See if you can get this info to him, he sure knows all about the little powerbooks, and will surely help you.

Depending on whether you intend to keep using the PB, consider the cost of any purchases.  If you are going to keep using the PB then getting a FW or USB card would give you the most adaptability for future use with hard drives, etc.

If you are only going to want to transfer some files then something like this would be satisfactory.

http://www.amazon.com/Viking-Card-CompactF...T/dp/B00000J3SA

It allows you to plug in Compact Flash card into your PCMCIA slot and use it as a mini drive. Of course you would need a card reader that takes CF and plugs into your other Mac and a CF card. However there are also further adapters that fit into this adapter that take other kinds of digital cards like SD.

Here are some links to read about cards for G3 PBs. There is also a combo FW/USB card available. I have two separate cards that work flawlessly but they are no longer sold. If you have a choice and only want to buy a single card, go for a FW so you can boot from it.

Flunked that test.

PowerBook OS 9.2.2. It says IP address "Not available" ????
iMac OS X 10.2.0

Neither computer has internet access.

I went onto the PowerBook. Started File sharing.
Created Folder on hard disk called "Transfer". Set it for guest access.

Went to the iMac hooked to the PB w/Enet cable (straight thru).

Did the Go thing. Asked if I wanted to connect to IP 192.168.2.97. Now we're getting somewhere! WRONG!!!!!

Says it could not connect. I didn't write down the error message. wallbash.gif  blush-anim-cl.gif It sure doesn't help when the person you are trying to help is sitting in a chair and the mout is going non-stop. the next time I am going to ask her (politely of course) to please find something to do in a different room so I can concentrate.

I am going to try to pick up a crossover Enet cable before I go over again. RadioShack? I sure hope not Best Buy. Their cables are out of site!

I promise I'll take better notes next time I go over. I am also going to update iMac to 10.2.8.

I hate this commuting to try and resolve problems, especially when there is no internet access! Travel time approaches 1/2 hour each way. ARGHHHHHH!
