Loosing internet connection on Leopard sometimes
« on: January 31, 2008, 03:58:07 PM »
I am using Leopard on a Mac Book Pro, and every once in a while a notice appears in a box stating that Connection to the Server has timed out or words to that effect, and I loose my internet connection, which means I have to reboot - extremely frustrating.

I have just the one computer, and an Airport Base Station.

Any ideas?

What does your Airport signal strength icon in the right-hand part of your Menu Bar show when this happens?
What are the lights on the Airport after this happens?

As far as re-establishing the connection, a somewhat faster method may be to open the Network pref panel, verify that "AirPort" is selected, and then click the "Advanced" button. you should now see a 'sheet' showing several tabs, with the AirPort one highlighted. Click the "TCP/IP" tab just to the right. If you have your connection set to "Using DHCP", there should be a button labeled "Renew DHCP Lease." Clicking that button should re-establish your connection.

However, the reason for losing the connection is still not answered. Do you have any apps that are using your connection while hidden? It may be that some app is trying to connect to a specific URL that is never completely loading its info. dntknw.gif

Anyone turned the microwave on? Did the phone ring? Could be interference. Have you got the interference robustness option checked? Tried setting your base station to a different channel? See this thread for more info:

BTW - which frequency do all these things operate on in the UK? Somewhere I read that the 5GHz band isn't allowed there(?)

Larry, by "reboot" do you mean restart the computer, or logon to the internet again? I know, some folks, now including myself, are logged on all the time.

Does this message come up while you are engaged in a session online? Have you asked your service provider about it, or have you somehow eliminated them as a possible source of the problem?
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

The wireless airport says that I am on all the time, the frustration is that if I click the airport in the top toolbar I occasionally get Kernel panic.

Rebooting is restarting.

This never happened when I run Jaquar - it just happens in Leopard.

I have the internet turned on 24/24 and the computer turned on for a couple of hours - it's just frustrating, and I am blaming Leopard.

I am just using the Mac as a Mac and am not bothered in running windows applications.

The Strength is fully on, and the light on the airport is continuous.

How do I find out  " you have any apps that are using your connection while hidden? It may be that some app is trying to connect to a specific URL that is never completely loading its info. dntknw.gif

Go into the Utilities folder within Applications and open Activity Monitor (if you don't see a window right away hit Command + 1). Use the bar at the top of the open window to choose Active Processes. Put the window to the side of your desktop so you can watch it while you are online.  When the drop happens see if you can see a process or application that might be responsible by suddenly activating or being active when it normally isn't.

You might also get some information from the logs. I'm assuming the Airport has some sort of 'crash log'. Again go to Utilities and open Console, click on the Logs icon on the left side of window. Scroll down and look through the list to find anything related to Airport.

That said, there are a lot of people with similar problems. Some suggested solutions:

QUOTE
wireless connectivity problems of a general nature not involving the MacBook. The most common cause for this is radio interference from other sources of 2.4GHz signals (like portable phones and microwave ovens) and neighboring wireless networks. Sometimes these problems can be resolved by experimenting with manually changing the channel the Base Station (or wireless router) transmits on to find a mostly clear channel.

Or

QUOTE
Open Airport Utility, and choose manual settings.
Next, choose "Advanced" from the choices on the top.
Next click on the IPv6 button.
Finally, set the "IPv6 Mode" to "Link-Local Only" (the other choices are tunnel and node).
Restart your Mac and the Airport/modem, and hopefully, like me, you're problem will be solved. Good luck.
