Mp3 and Me-Help
« on: February 09, 2008, 11:45:35 AM »
Hi,
I am thinking about getting an mp3 player. I could use some advice on which to get. I have an older g5 with plenty of ram and disk. It
is running 10.3.9 and I don't want to upgrade right now. The problem seems to be, which units will work with this machine. I have looked at
the 3rd generation nano and like its looks. I know you need 10.4 for itunes to sync files, but I don't know if it will work with 10.3.9
without auto sync. I have looked at Sansa View and like the fact it has an FM radio. Will either or both of these units work with 10.3.9
and are there other machines you can recomend which will work. I am looking to spend about $200. and want to get 8 or 16gb.Thanks for the help.

SIncerely
Dick Zion

I don't know how important it is to you to be able to use iTunes, but here is a list of compatible players:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93548 (Note: not sure how up to date this is - some of these are not new players)

With the Sansa, you should be able to connect the player to your Mac and drag and drop your music files (though see comments after article in last link below - apparently even that is not foolproof). You won't be able to use iTunes with a Sansa. iTunes and the older Nano Bill mentioned will be fine.

Also see this SlashDot discussion of alternatives - including one I wasn't familiar with (Cowon). Also read the post from Minority (long post more than halfway down) about how he wishes he'd bought an iPod. wink.gif

The integration with iTunes is wonderful, IMHO. Everyone in our household now has their own iPod, and I doubt I'd buy another brand of Mp3. iPods just work - the software is excellent, the interface easy to grasp etc. We've had the batteries replaced on both our older iPods (1st gen 4GB Nano and 40GB 4th gen) and it was worth doing.

You might want to read the comments at the end of this review of one of the Sansa lines (not sure which one you're looking at) - I'd say there were enough unhappy campers to warrant some concern:

Here as well, again in the comments section:

At the end of the month I will be selling a 4th generation 40GB iPod. Very lightly used by a careful 50-something, never dropped, NEVER been jogging with it, minimal number of charging cycles and I'm throwing in a Marware case all for $115. It comes with a dock, unused earbuds and the box.  I'm not sure why I am selling it but I decided to get an iPod Classic for my wife's B-Day so the old iPod has to go...  If anyone is interested PM me... just don't mention anything to my Significant Other!
